Re: Great American

Are you sure about the New Hartford Shopping Center one? Unless it was converted later on, that store was a Grand Union in the early-mid 80's. The company bought a small Utica-based chain called Chicago Markets I'm going to say maybe in the '85-'87 range and converted a lot of those to Great America...

Re: Great American

Cooperstown actually closed either the end of April or May this year and was reopened as a Price Chopper by 4th. of July weekend. And getting back to the Big V stores, there was one in Colonie right across from Colonie Center mall that is now a Bed, Bath and Beyond. And this one is for BillyGr: wasn...

-Fonda, NY, -Gloversville, NY, -Amsterdam, NY, -Richfield Springs, NY, -Herkimer, NY, -Little Falls, NY, Canajoharie, NY, -Glenville, NY, -Oneonta, NY, -East Stroudsburg, Pa. which to my knowledge was the company's ONLY foray outside NY State. I think, but I'm not sure, that the stores they had in B...

Re: Edwards/Finast/Super Finast

Did they close the store or did they just change banners? Nope-it closed. And the more I think about it, I believe it was located in the same building that once housed a GEX department store back in the '60's. The building has long been demolished and I think a medical office building is there now....

Re: Edwards/Finast/Super Finast

I remember Edwards in Poughkeepsie, NY before it was turned into a Stop and Shop around 2000. Stop and Shop eventually tore down the old Caldor and built a Super Stop and Shop. Was this Edwards most northern store in New York? BDK No I don't believe it was. I seem to recall an Edwards Food Warehous...

Re: Acme in New York

Thanks for all the info. everyone. I had no idea they had that large a presence in NY State at one time. And here's the interesting part: I never set foot in one of them when they were Acmes. We never shopped at Acme until we moved to Pa. at the end of '66 and I was all of 4+ yrs. old. And the two I...

Acme in UP State N.Y.

To try to get the Acme/NY State discussion back in the proper forum, I've got a question or two then. Acme had a presence where I live. I know for sure they had a store in Johnstown which closed in late '73. I don't know for certain if this was a replacement for a smaller store they had closer to do...

Re: Grand Union

I posted this some time ago but I'll say it again: I lived in the Scranton, Pa./NE Pa. area from late '66 to mid '80 and NEVER knew of even a single Grand Union in the immdeiate area. The closest one was the Milford, Pa. unit referenced earlier in this thread. You had to cross into NY state to find ...

Re: Old central Maryland / southern central Pennsylvania retail?

And, as a side note. There's still a former marina (I didn't know that was the term they used) Safeway in Frederick as well. It's now home to a big Dollar Tree. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of it. It's easy to find, it's right on South Jefferson Street/340 East off of US 15/40. I saw that store...

Re: Early 90s-build Kmarts with auto centers?

I know of one right near me that was in Amsterdam, NY that opened in September or October '94. It was a Super K which was built as a replacement store for a smaller one right up the road located in a former Grants. It was integrated right into the side of the building and was much larger than the on...

"Quality Still Dominates Where Economy Originates" for A+P WEO from the early '70's. When set to music, it was quite catchy. A later A+P WEO one was "WEO, WEO, We Won't Stop Trying 'Till You Say WEO"

Just a quick update on this: If this is indeed the address in question, I was in the area yesterday and today and that location is now home to a Super Foodtown store which is currently celebrating its grand opening.

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs

I didn't think there was a connection between the NE Pa. Giant stores of that era and Giant Carlisle. Ironically, Giant Carlisle has come into the Scranton Wilkes-Barre market over the last few years. I've got a Giant shopping bag from the mid 70's which maybe someday I'll scan the logo and put it u...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs

Maybe someone more familiar with Grand Union and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre region could fill us in. I lived in the area from late 1966 to mid 1980 and I can't ever recall Grand Union even having one store in the area. The major players at that time were Acme, A+P and Giant Markets. I'm not even sur...

Re: Summer Road Trip to Philadelphia and Suburbs

Since I have more time, a little background about those two former Grand Union locations. The first one (Save-A-Lot in Fort Plain) actually survived every wave of GU closings and was bought and run by C+S Wholesale as part of the bankruptcy auction. I'd say it stayed open for maybe a year or so befo...
