Then of course there was Bill Davila, president of Vons. I tihnk he did ads for them right up to the time Safeway took over.

There was another episode of Friends where someone took a Vons brand Mac and Cheese from the cupboard. Amusing, because like you say, the show was set in NYC. I noticed a lot of Ralphs brand (With the Ralphs covered up leaving a red oval) products on Roseanne, which was supposed to take place in Ill...

Our Weinstock's had a Harris & David's as well, up until Macy's bought them. (At that time, Macy's closed the Weinstock's as they had a Macy's at the other end of the mall. Local Dept. store chain Gottschalk's relocated to the old Weinstock's, and the cafe' space is now Women's wear or something...

There was a "Food World" market in the Fig Garden Village shopping center here in Fresno. It was affilliated with the local Christensen's chain, and was their "upscale" outlet. It was the last of the chain to close, and that space in the center is now a Longs Drug store.

Phar-Mor built a store in Fresno, Ca, but it never opened. It eventually became a "Super Vons" which is now closed. That building is now a low-end furniture store.

Well, south of Fresno! (There was a Pak-N-Save in an old Zody's store on Blackstone. That, along with the 2 Safeway stores were sold to Save Mart when Safeway pulled out of the Fresno market)

I know exactly what type of Safeway cart you are talking about. When I was younger, the Safeway we shopped at had them with the "Circle S" on the front of the cart. Last year some of them turned up at MacFrugal's (Big Lots) with the "Ribbon S", but those carts are all gone, now. ...

We had several Circle K's here in Fresno, a few of them still have the 80's Circle-K interior, only the new operator has painted over the purple stripe with yellow paint. (The 80's Circle K had orange, red and purple stripes going around the perimeter of the store.) The rest of them are not very rec...

Yes, it was described in the opening hype as a "Super Vons". The signage was the standard red Vons sign, the only difference being that it listed the dry cleaner and video rental on the front of the store, along with the bakery, service deli and the normal departments they promote on the r...

I don't think there are any, anymore. I remember going to one in Orlando in 1984, it was a few blocks away from my grandmother's house. Shortly after that it became a Piggly Wiggly, and was that until 1990 when it became an IGA. That only lasted for about a year, then it sat vacant for a while until...

The Zody's here became a Pak-N-Save. I was looking through old footage at work and Zody's closed in 1984 (I want to say November... I remember it was towards the end of 1984). Anyway, I remember going to Pak-N-Save and finding a Zody's cart and wondering what kind of store that was! (We moved to Cal...

Vons opened a smaller version of this type of store here in Fresno about the same time, as mentioned in the article. (It was originally built for Phar-Mor but they went bankrupt before they had a chance to use it. That Vons replaced a 1980's store across the street that is now a Ross) It had the Cle...

BTW: does anyone know what store James Garner is in when pictured in the opening sequence of "The Rockford Files"? I have wondered the same thing. I am guessing it was one of the So Cal grocers, but I am unfamiliar with the 60's decor packages of Ralphs, Vons or Alpha Beta so I couldn't g...

The original Stepford Wives was filmed in a Grand Union (You can read the sign very clearly). Not sure about the remake since I never saw it.
