Aldi set up shop around here in '97 with a single store in Johnstown and as I recall, they had scanners from the beginning. Here's something interesting about their private label products I've noticed. Look at the placement of the bar codes on the items. They seem to be on every "face" of ...

Johnstown is the county seat so since there are much fewer people in the downtown area on the weekends maybe it doesn't pay to open on Sunday. And here's another interesting Rite-Aid vs. Eckerd factoid I now remember again occurring in Johnstown. The Eckerd is located in a very small enclosed shoppi...

There were Barker's stores Upstate as well. I know for sure there was one in the Pyramid Mall in Johnstown because we shopped there all the time. And I think they also had stores in Oneonta and perhaps Saratoga although I'm not exactly sure. For the Johnstown store specifically, they took over the s...

OK it makes sense now that somebody mentions 1872 and I would say the chain dates from then because I remember 1972 as being their centennial year. The logo they had for the occassion was prominently displayed in their stores that year.

The Mohawk could have been, but if so one of the parts must have been larger, as the later configuration had at least 2 or 3 stores between Price Chopper & Bradlees (including Present Comapny catalog showroom). I'm going to guess here but I'd say Mohawk Mall opened in the very early 70's with t...

A couple of malls in the Albany area had Price Choppers - Mohawk Mall (Niskayuna, near Schenectady) and Clifton Country Mall. If memory serves me correctly, wasn't the Mohawk Mall PC originally a Pantry Pride? Matter of fact, I think it was part of a J. M. Fields combo with the J. M. Fields later b...

Judging from the vehicles parked in front of the two stores paying particular attention to the one behind the station wagon in front of the Safeway, would I be correct in saying that the picture itself dates from probably about the mid '70's?

Here's something that occurred to me when this merger was announced and I wonder what's going to happen. Gloversville, NY is a smaller city near where I live and in the late '90's both Rite-Aid and Eckerd built brand new stores right across the street from each other which still operate to this day....

There's a small vintage Grand Union not far from me in Northville, NY and parked at their loading dock behind the building is an old GU trailer with the "Clean, Fresh and Good" slogan on it. I hadn't seen one of those in years. That was last year and as of a month and a half-ago, it was st...

The Richfield Springs store closed sometime last year I believe when Price Chopper (Golub Corp) opened a new store probably around a mile from this store. Matter of fact, the store closed within days of Price Chopper setting up shop. It was a rather small store that seemed to have served the commini...
