Food Giant/Mayfair connection in Las Vegas?

A mystery. I have a Food Giant ad from January 30th 1962. The two locations listed became Mayfairs. We briefly had 4 Food Giant stores in Vegas in the 90's. They were started by a former Mayfair executive who ran a Food Giant division of Mayfair in Tucson. Were the Vegas Food Giants owned by the Cal...

Re: Fox Markets of California

I'd like to see more about the "25 stores" in Nevada. They never had that many in Las Vegas. There wasn't that many supermarket type grocery stores in Clark County in the early 60's. I have an ad from January 30, 1962 that lists three locations; 5th and Oakey (22 E Oakey), 1310 E College (...

Re: Smith's/PriceRite/Food4Less Las Vegas

The only thing I would add to that is that Smith's started "recycling" store numbers for new units. #371 and #376 are not the original stores with those numbers. Will make it real confussing for future geneologists :0

Re: Smith's/PriceRite/Food4Less Las Vegas

Don't know that it will be much help with Food Fair, but this info is from The Dee Smith Story by Howard Carlisle. This is a difficult to find book, but a great read. FOOD GIANT -Oct 71 Smith's aquired 26 of 62 Food Giant store from Vornado Inc, a conglomerate hq'd in NJ -Exercised right of refusal ...

Re: Smith's Food King in Socal--with store locations

How about Palm Springs? I believe the stores there were all built new by Smith's. A couple were late 70's superstores with windows across the front. One was a "mini super store." The Indio store was the largest Smith's I had ever seen, it was 80k+. Anyone remember these locations?

Re: Closed VONS, closed Albertsons, Las Vegas, NV

Safeway used to turn some of thier older, smaller stores in liquor stores ala Lee's liquors. This was the only one in Vegas as far I remember. It's wasn't open as a LB for very long.

Re: Closed VONS, closed Albertsons, Las Vegas, NV

When I moved to Las Vegas in 1985, the Ross was a Safeway "Liquor Barn" at Eastern & DI. Octotillo Plaza was home to Smith's (Former PetCo building) Smith's wanted to expand the store into a super store. They couldn't come to a meeting of the minds with the landlord and closed the stor...

Re: SupeRx (Kroger) Found in Las Vegas, Nevada...

It wasn't ever owned by Kroger as far as I know. When I called on the drug store in the 90's, it was an independent and not part of a chain.

Smith's - Las Vegas

I have a special affinity for Smith's since I worked for them for 8 years and then sold to them for 15 years. I've done some research on the locations and geneology ( Food City, Food Fair, Panty Pride) Hope to post the info soon. Most of the former sites are still around in some form or another. The...

Las Vegas - Lee Brothers

2400 E. Bonanza was a Lee's Brother for only a couple years. Lucky purchased the store in 1971. After being absorbed by Albertson's, they tried very hard to find a buyer for the store a few years ago. That didn't play out and they converted the store back to Lucky's. (Albertson's never remodeled the...

Safeway - CompUSA

This block has an interesting history. The original Safeway store is next door to the Latino Mkt on the west end. It was closed and a new store built (CompUSA location ) in the 70's. Von's operated the store for a short time after they took over all the Vegas stores. It sat empty for a short time be...
