Re: Why was A&P so committed to being in Connecticut?
Connecticut has a number of distinct submarkets--Hartford and New Haven, for example, are very different places, but the state is relatively affluent and despite very little population growth different parts have attracted new chains over time: For example, Shop-Rite has returned to the Hartford ar...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)
There is a scene in the early part of the movie "The Irishman" with Robert DeNiro that shows a Food Fair logo on a grocery delivery truck.
He apparently works for the Food Fair warehouse in Philadelphia as a delivery driver to the stores.
Very cool to see!

A Mayfair supermarket exterior in Malibu, Calif. (Heathercliff Rd.) appeared in the background of a shot in a season 3 episode of "CHiPs" titled "Valley Go Home!" It first aired in September of 1979. The shot can be seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSg2TVFI3Qw...

Re: Archive of annual reports
Since I'm a librarian who digitizes things for a living and a big supporter of the Internet Archive, I'm not sure how I missed this: https://archive.org/details/annual-reports-archive?tab=collection It's surprisingly complete through the 1980s, and on a quick glance I've found Safeway, A&P, Luc...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021
Even though they operated in Peoria for only an eyeblink of time, Eisner/Jewel left behind a sizable architectural legacy here. An ex-Jewel at 4103 SW Adams St survives ; though if it once had porcelain enamel cladding, it's now gone. A renovated Jewel at 4425 N Prospect Rd still sells groceries as...

Re: Kroger in Vermont?
Very interesting! In my past research for Food Fair I found many anomalies like that. Company annual reports often did not jive with media and industry reports. Internal reports would tell me of a store in Vermont or New Hampshire or West Virginia or Nevada and even Palm Springs without any external...
