Re: Safeway Stores in NY and PA

AWESOME image.

Amazingly, there's no Google Street View for there. But the satellite image clearly shows the original roofline and the pylon still intact.

Safeway, Raley's and Roy's, Elko, Nevada

Popped a few quick shots in Elko, NV while passing by last week. There are some seriously awesome buildings and signage in that town. None the least of which are old grocery stores... http://www.99w.com/evilsam/gallery/groceteria/royselkonv.jpg This is Roy's downtown. Didn't make it inside, but how ...

Re: 1979 Thriftway Locations in Portland

The Jo-Ann Fabric/Crafts at 12312 SW Walker Rd in Beaverton was originally Ernie's Thriftway. I'm reasonably certain it was still in business in 1979. The facade today (Google Street View) looks exactly the same as it did as Ernie's (sans THRIFTWAY signage, of course) after they rebuilt from a fire....

Re: Speedee McDonald's (Big Golden Arches) in Portland, OR

The McDonald's at 9475 Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy in Beaverton was an original McDonald's red-and-white sloped roof structure with the dual arch handlebars. I believe the current odd-shaped mansard McD's at that site was simply built around it. I don't think they actually demolished the original struct...

Re: 1969 Safeway Locations In Portland

The replacement Jantzen Beach store has kind of an odd layout in that the produce section is separated from the rest of the store. It looked cool and made more sense in the "Marketplace" days. In the Lifestyle format, it's similar to a Dominick's layout. I'm guessing the old format didn't ...

Re: Any NON-FOOD Fred Meyer stores still operating?

I'm pretty sure they've wiped them all out. I'm thinking the last of these were wiped out with the Utah conversion to the Smith's Marketplace brand. The only other one I know of that was still around in recent years was Pocatello, and that store was replaced with a whole new one about five years ago...

Re: Older KFC Locations

I have to admit that the Everett KFC was the first time I'd ever seen a sign reminding customers that "HEALTH DEPT. REGULATIONS REQUIRE THE USE OF A NEW PLATE WITH EACH TRIP TO THE BUFFET." At the time, I thought that would be common sense, but I've seen similar signs in other places sinc...

Re: Question About Mall Tenants in Portland, OR in 1985

The Electric Palace occupied space at Clackamas Town Center along the north side of the food court level overlooking the ice skating rink during this era. The walls were painted flat black with a fluorescent space scene painted into the ceiling, lit up by black lights. That and the games provided al...
