Re: First Levitz, now Wickes
The only chain I have seen everywhere is Ashley, but I think they are all independently owned.

Re: Phoenix Area Gemco stores
I went into the store at 6719 W Thomas last week. Even though it says "Bargaintown" on the roof, the from says "Phoenix Marketplace". It's a swap meet inside. The individual stores have walls or dividers that go almost to the ceiling, so you couldn't see all the way from front to...

Re: Jerrys
Thanks for the picture. In Phoenix, there is a Jerry's Restaurant on Thomas just west of 24th street. The sign looks just like the one in the picture.

Re: Phoenix - Remembering Smitty's
Here is what the abandoned original Smitty's looks like now (pictures are from summer 2007) Everything on that corner is abandoned: Smitty's (later Southwest Supermarkets), KFC, Walgreens, and some independent shops. Only the Burger King on the corner is open (out of view of the picture). One the si...

Woolworth's on Market St
I saw the posted picture of the Woolworth's at Market & Powell. Wasn't there another location on market that closed in the late 90's? It was across from Nordstrom's. You could enter it either from the street or from BART because the entrance was a little below street level.

Gibson's in El Paso
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Gibson's in El Paso and what happened to them. I remember going with my parents to a brand new store called Gibson's in the early 80's. I don't remember how many, if any other locations they had. I think it was a supermarket, but I was too young to ...

Godfathers in Newark
Jeff, I've been to the Godfather's in Newark, California that is on Thornton. It is a gas station that sells Godfather's pizza by the slice or pie. When you go in, you can see the mixer and oven in the back where they make it, but it is really a convenience store that sells the Godfather's brand of ...

A&P in Huntsville, AL
Do you remember if there was an A&P at the corner of Byrd Springs and South Memorial Parkway in Huntsville, Alabama? My grandmother was telling me that there used to be one in that area. She even has a meat cutter's white smock with the A&P logo. I think my uncle may have used to cut meat fo...

Furrs in El Paso
This subject reminds me of a Furr's my parents used to take me to in El Paso. The last time I went was in 1983 before we moved to Austin. You would pick the dishes you wanted off the line and they'd charge you for each dish. The area had gone further downhill when I last saw the area fifteen and fiv...

HEB Foods
I was wondering if anyone has any old pictures or stories of the HEB chain in Texas?
