In the few Vons stores I'm familiar with, the opening year was correct for that particular store. The now defunct Clovis store said 1986, which was the year that location opened. The defunct store at Cedar & Dakota said 1985, which is the year it opened as Vons. (The building opened in 1984 as a...

Wow. I have another reason to loathe Rite-Aid. They killed off Thrifty and Payless out here on the West Coast, closing down nearly all the stores in favor of dinky little stores with no windows and excessively dark parking lots. My great-grandmother shopped at Eckerd for years, oddly enough the loca...

There's a newer Albertson's (Opened in the late 90's) that is in a plaza with a Longs Drugs that has no pharmacy. There is a cosmetics display along the wall where a pharmacy would be, with a fixture that reads simply "Albertsons Quality Products". Across town there's another Albertsons (M...

Yeah, the 80's version that was reran on Lifetime had fixtures and decor provided by Hughes Markets. (The aisle hangers said Hughes on them, and they had some Hughes sale posters as set decor). I've never seen the 60's version so I can't comment on that.

Zody's here opened as Pak-N-Save in early 1985. Would Safeway have opened this store, or was the chain under Brentwood's control at this time?

1985 movie: "The Stuff"

Any ideas on what chain this was? The logo on the aisle hanger looks like it might be a Shop Rite logo, but it's so far away and tiny it's hard to be certain. The font on the wall lettering, however, looks similar to what was used at a Piggly Wiggly I frequented in Florida. Since the movie was suppo...

Oh, OK, the Best building was demolished, then. Before the Petsmart opened, there was a dirt lot at the end of the center. (It had been a lot since at least 1986 or 1987 -- we visited the center a lot because I forced my mom to shop at the Safeway there up until it closed) I had always wondered why ...

Some locations: -- Blackstone Avenue near Shaw, Fresno. Now somebody's Country Kitchen. That would be a BJ's Kountry Kitchen. I am not positive it was a Sambo's location, but I know it was a Denny's as it still has the distinctively shaped Denny's sign frame. I have been meaning to check with the c...

Where in the shopping center was this? I only remember the anchors of the center being Longs, Safeway, Sprouse-Reitz, and Big 5... Was the Best store in one of these stores?

Thanks for that bit of history! I have a demo LP of ad jingles from the 70's, and Globe Discount was one of the stores I knew nothing about.

This cart did not have a painted metal "S" on the front, but it is entirely possible it was broken off at some point in it's life. Yes, the Safeways I remember were all in California. I was in one in Oklahoma when I was quite small but I cannot remember what type of cart they used at the t...

Old Safeway Cart Spotted

I saw this cart in a parking lot over the weekend. The first thing I noticed (apart from the "S" logo) was how small it was. It was about the size of a Thrifty Drug cart. Anybody have any ideas when this cart might have been used? Every Safeway I was ever in back in the day used those tall...

Went in this store today, and the new owners have pretty much wrecked the interior. Gone are the 1960's gondola shelving, replaced by nasty yellow warehouse shelving, complete with auction company stickers and old shelf labels from whatever store used these before. Now the place feels like you're in...

Yes, this supermarket has appeared in a few other ads. I don't recognize the interior from any specific chain, but I am unfamiliar with the 70's interiors of Vons and Ralphs so those might be possibilities.
