The Purity on Shields is still there, only it has been siginificantly remodeled on the exterior. It is the building that houses the DAV thrift store. It has been many things since Purity went out -- a House of Fabrics store and Arthur's Toys that I remember. (The Kragen across the street is an old S...

I was just at the Ventura yesterday to see what was going on. There were large "GRAND OPENING" and "NEW OWNERS" banners hanging outside. Inside, the shelves are full once again, and they have switched suppliers from Unified to C&S. (Western Family store brand products have be...

OK, while we're discussing defunct seafood places, how about Skipper's? There's one here that is operating as a Mexican restaurant, but the interior is EXACTLY like it was when it operated as Skipper's, down to the frosted glass fish on the dividers between the booths...

I remember the Fresno location closed abruptly in the middle of the week in 1997 or 1998... The employees didn't even know the place was closing, they just showed up to a chained up door the next day. The building sat vacant for a few years, with Christmas decorations painted on the windows for mont...

Ventura Market sold?

I went to the Ventura Market day before yesterday and saw an application to transfer the liquor license posted on the front window. If it has indeed been sold, hopefully the new owners don't do too much in the way of remodeling. This place looks basically the same as it did when Safeway opened it in...

A Shakey's opened here in Fresno about 3 years ago in an old Golden Corral buffet. They are still open, but I wonder how much of the business is coming from pizza and how much is coming from the buffet... The original Shakey's location near Fresno State was torn down about 2 years ago. It was taken ...

Edwards coffee was also another Safeway brand. I said it before, but I'd like the "Select" line a lot better if it had the red stripe with "Finest Quality" on the bottom of the packaging!!!

Well, you mustn't confuse "Store brand" products with "generic" products. I remember Vons selling an awful line of goods called "Slim Price" back in the 80's. We tried a few products of that line, and they were all just awful. These were sold in addition to the Vons sto...

Looking at that commercial, we must've had those in Fresno. There were 2 Taco Bells that were in buildings with that architecture. I just assumed they had always been Taco Bells since the buildings were very similar to a 70's Taco Bell.

I really don't know! The only info I have is this photo I found on the internet:

I read somewhere that the notch part was demolished when BEST folded, making it a plain ordinary building.

I don't have anything other than a hunch, but I suspect there was an Albertsons/Payless combo in Clovis. At the corner of Willow & Shaw there was a Payless Super Drug paired up with the independent Bad Boy Market. I always suspected the market was a chain of some sort, but as we didn't start goi...

I don't know anything about the current Pak-N-Saves, but the one we had in Fresno (Opened in 1985, after Zody's closed up shop) had a decor similar to Food 4 Less, yellow walls with painted on black department signage, along with warehouse shelving. I seem to recall the one in Madera (Still open) ha...

There is still one operating in Clovis, under the Sno White name. There used to be one in Fresno at Ashlan & West, in an old KFC. That one got torn down about 8 years ago.
