Re: Safeway: Bothell, WA
It opened in December 1962. Here's the grand opening ad. As usual for grand openings of the day, Teeny, "Safeway's Magical Clown" was in attendance. In searching the Seattle Times database, I came across some classified ads that indicate this store was built concurrently with the recently ...

Re: Safeway: Bothell, WA
Wow... they even have the old fold-up shopping carts. I wonder why they left the original "thank you for shopping at safeway" lettering when they took everything else out. By the way, your first link doesn't work right. Update: It looks like this store's days are numbered. Developer purcha...

Re: Vintage Pizza Hut "Brown Roof"
As recently as 6 or 7 years ago, I remember seeing a couple of very old Pizza hut signs in Salem, Oregon, which read at the bottom "Nationally Famous Restaurant" I believe one of these was located somewhere along Lancaster, and the other was located in a different area of town, possibly C...

Re: SeaTac Mall/Commons at Federal Way
The curlicue L was still in use at a few locations at that point; I'm not sure when they switched the the simplified cursive L, but I know none of the former F&N/Lipman's/Crescent locations (Valley River Mall in Eugene, Lloyd Center, Jantzen Beach and Corvallis) ever had it, so that would put t...

Re: SeaTac Mall/Commons at Federal Way
The Target space was originally occupied by Peoples. When Mercantile Stores folded Peoples in early 1984, their mall locations (Federal Way, Lacey, and Yakima) were acquired by Mervyn's. Here's a flashback from YouTube: a 1981 SeaTac Mall commercial , with shots of the interior entrances to all the ...

Re: Albertsons Logos Through The Years
Here's an old Polaroid I picked up in a group of photographs. It may have been taken in Tacoma, Washington... I don't believe that picture is of any of the three stores that were in Tacoma (Lakewood, University Place, or 72nd and Pacific) during that era. They all had flat roofs and none of them ha...

Re: QFC Closing Lakewood Store
The Port Orchard (South Park Village) and Bremerton stores were both bannered as Thriftway under Uddenberg's ownership. Port Orchard had a Stock Market Foods as well, located in the former Kmart shopping center on Olney Road. Saar's operates that store now. I assume QFC shed that location around the...

Re: QFC Closing Lakewood Store
The Lakewood QFC was built as a Lucky supermarket and a PayLess Tacoma drug store in 1978. After Lucky left the Seattle area in 1985, both spaces were converted to a Pay 'n Pak home center, which operated until that chain folded in 1992. Uddenberg's Stock Market took over after that. I'm not really ...

Re: ShopKo stores-First ShopKo ever?/History
...there is one store in Lacey, WA south of Tacoma, as well as one in Salem, Oregon. I wonder if they felt that the large number of government workers in both Salem and Lacey/Olympia made them solid test markets. They're also on the southern fringes of the Portland and Seattle metro areas -- close ...

Re: H. Salt, Esq.
There were two H. Salt, Esq., restaurants in Tacoma, one at 6th & Alder and one at 5415 Pacific Ave. They were built in 1969-70 and operated by Harman Management Corp., which is KFC's biggest franchisee. These locations folded around 1978. It's obvious that the building prototype was basically t...

Re: PayLess Drug Stores
I know that a number of the Payless stores that were in the Seattle area before they were acquired by Rite-Aid had at least portions of the store decor that were carryovers from the Pay 'n Save stores, and in some cases these even lasted for several years before modern Rite Aid decor was applied ov...
