Actually 1801 W 11th is the replacement for 1950 W 11th, across
the street, which is now Save Mart. Safeway left Tracy for a few years in the late 80s/early 90s, from about 86/87 when the gable closed to 92. I grew up in Tracy so I know all this stuff.

Re: Does anyone remember Taco Charley?

Does anyone remember the mexican fast food restaurant chain in the 70's and early 80's called "Taco Charley"? They had a location on Pacific Avenue in Stockton. It was better food than Taco Bell, which ironically bought them out in the early 80's.One menu item was was kept during the chan...

Another thing:The west coast PayLess drugstore chain was originally 2(the Oregon-based Northwest one as well as Oakland-based "PayLess Super Drug Stores" that played a role in Albertsons' first entry into Northern California in the 60's/70's)that both got started in the late 1930's and me...

It was Arden Fair.

Re: Sambo's Restaurant Locations in California

[There was actually 2 locations in Stockton.] - The first one was located at 11 N. Center street which I believe opened in 1968 or 1969.That location later became a "Season's" then a "Bakers Square" and later a "Country Waffle House" before becoming a "Arizona Rest...

I believe Vons began in 1906. However, old Los Angeles Polk Directories list Charles Von der Ahe (the founder) associated with a store with a different name in some early years. The name "Von's" showed up around 1918 IIRC. It could have been around in 1916, I don't remember.

This store was opened as a Lucky/Savon on January 27, 1998. When it first opened I was Operating Manager for Savon Drugs in this store, left and later returned as General Manager, left and returned again post-merger as Drug Manager. The interior in this store is awesome. Most of the former Lucky/Sav...

The original Lucky in Tracy, CA became a furniture store. What makes it interesting is they kept the Lucky "Quality Guaranteed" signs intact, because they liked the slogan, which makes the store look kind of goofy.

I'm 100% certain there was no connection at all, and I wasn't trying to suggest that there was. The California incarnation of Mammonth Mart was entirely a Raley's phenomemon, and was probably limited to one specific store on Folsom Boulevard in Sacramento (which remains a Raley's to this day).[/quot...

Brooklyn & Ford Market

I'll check the Polk City Directories since I live in LA anyway.

Thanks.

Brooklyn & Ford Market, East Los Angeles

Anybody ever been to this store? My third-hand guess is that it dates to the 1940s, at the latest. I'm wondering what this was in a previous life. The current name refers to it's location, at the corner of what was Brooklyn (now Cesar E. Chavez) Avenue and Ford Boulevard. (Just east of the 710 Long ...

[I was thinking the same thing, except that the year is 1983, and I preferred lunch at Weinstock's Garden Room to the dimly lit KMart Cafeteria.

I don't remember it as the Garden Room, but as Harris & David's. (Not to be confused with Harry & David the chocolate guys)

Fry's Food/Electronics

Fry's Electronics even uses the same slogan Fry's Food did in the Bay Area 25 years ago- "Your best buys are always at Fry's!"
