Re: Kmart and Safeway 1998
It seems like the only synergy would have been on the distribution side because KMart didn't have a strong distribution network on the grocery side of the business and Safeway obviously did. This would have allowed KMart to try and catch up with WalMart at a faster pace. It still would've been a ha...

Re: Kmart and Safeway 1998
This June 1999 article reports on rumors of Safeway being interested in KMart FWIW https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1999-jun-19-fi-48004-story.html I think I also read rumors of a Carrefour/Kmart merger. The idea of Safeway pulling Kmart along would've been bad IF it was under "centrali...

Sears Bakery/Deli/Cafe (1990)
While doing research for something else, an intriguing entry under the Restaurants section of the Yellow Pages of Waco, Texas stuck out..."Sears Bakery Deli Cafe", at the same address of the Sears in Richland Mall (which closed a few years back). I know Sears had candy and popcorn counters...

Re: Walgreen Agency?
I have seen a few older pictures of west coast cities with Walgreens signs in them, these must have been the agency stores. Walgreens wasn't common here until about the mid-late 1990s. Not to say that there weren't "agency" stores on the west coast (there probably were)but Walgreens actua...

Re: Selah Safeway
Eastern Washington, small town called Selah outside of Yakima, Safeway opened a 11,000 square foot store in 1980. The front of the store featured a bold awning that was popular for many years and remains today. The interior and departments were simple and nimble, like a number of other Safeways tha...

Re: Hinky Dinky and Supermarkets Interstate
I hopped down a rabbit hole and found something interesting--apparently Hinky Dinky (chain from Omaha) has their employee newsletters digitized. I'm intrigued by one aspect of their business--they figured out in the 1960s how to expand by leasing the food store operations for discount stores which ...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations
I think I had seen somewhere that 4000 was for early 1970s stores, and was perplexed when I found 4xxx stores that were clearly from 1990s. Of all the retail and restaurant companies, I think Kmart's makes one of the least sense.

Re: "Grandma" at 125
I think that A&P could've saved itself by focusing more on the acquisitions they had, and by the early 1980s, Kroger was buying Dillon Cos., which added some decidedly non-Kroger names to their portfolio. Their purchase of Borman's in Michigan gave them Farmer Jack, which they eventually rebrand...

Re: "Grandma" at 125
Was Super Fresh only in New Jersey by that point? There were Super Fresh-branded stores in Louisiana but that may have come later. I wonder why Richmond's is unique as a "free-standing division". It wasn't because it was it was isolated, for sure, as Michigan, Atlanta, and New Orleans were...

Re: Collecting detailed info on individual stores with Bluepages
It's a cool concept. At the same time, I've given up on simply contributing to wikis (used to be a big fan of Wikimapia, though even that hasn't seen much activity lately) because information gets replicated, changed, you have to deal with trolls and psycho moderators, and continues to actively harm...

Re: Sneak Preview: Houston, 1925-1982
A Houston library card allows you to access Chron's microfilms, which does fill in a lot of gaps. I can't say for sure about Safeway abandoning stores en masse in the 1970s (there were stores in the 1980s that closed, and in case, closed and reopened a few years later), but Kroger also had a fair am...

Re: American Stores-era ACME history
That wasn't it. Besides, none of the website links even on Archive.org seem to work without dozens of redirects.
I'm thinking maybe the original article linked above was it, anything bigger than that was a figment of my imagination.

Re: Safeway Europe and Australia
Is there a good reason why Safeway's UK division skipped France, Belgium, and Netherlands, and went straight to West Germany for expansion? Safeway's U.S. divisions tended to be centered around major areas and then slowly diffused out to counties beyond the "core city".

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations
14500 Plank Road in Baker, Louisiana seems to be missing. I can't find proof positive it was a Kmart beyond references to Kmart Plaza, but it was discussed here (on Groceteria) as being closed in the early 1990s (as Kmart). It ended up becoming one of the stranger Albertsons out there (along with an...

Re: Did Safeway ever operate in Minnesota?
Here is a map showing Safeway's trade area in Iowa in 1960. This doesn't solve the Minnesota mystery, but it does shed light on how the chain was developing their trade area in this part of the country: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/128562809/ Safeway operated as far north as Mason City, a sc...
