Re: Kroger superstore, Jackson MI
A few superstores had brown brick in front of meat counters, especially service meat counters which Kroger had for a while. Another brown brick spot was around the specialty cheese shop.

Re: Former Kroger Stores in Jackson MS
Both K-Marts were accompanied by A&P stores. The U.S. 80 store replaced the longtime A&P at Mart 51 which later became Big Star then Mart 51 Supermarket. Last time I was by there (Mart 51) it was a CitiTrends clothing retailer. It was a virtual A&P museum with original refrigeration from...

Re: Sunflower Food Store.. an original Mississippi chain?
Sunflower Food Stores were originally owned by the Lewis Grocer Company from Indianola, MS. Just this past year, Mr. Celian Lewis, the last Lewis to helm the chain, passed away at his home in Destin (he lived at my condominium complex). The Lewis family sold the chain to Supervalu who had long been ...

Re: Former Kroger Stores in Jackson MS
Actually, the Robinson Road replacement store was a greenhouse, one of the earliest. The small store at Westland Plaza actually outlasted the Triangle Mart store that was its virtual twin. By the time WP was replaced the greenhouse had superseded the superstore. I thought Sherwin-Williams had reloca...

Re: A&P Private Labels
Most of this time, the label would have been "Our Own". During the 1950's and into the 1960's, Nectar Tea was still available. There were the occasional simple "A&P" labels as well though the really promoted blend was "Our Own". Even after A&P began to replace A...

Re: Former Kroger Stores in Jackson MS
Westland Plaza did have a Kroger, but it was not where McDade's is now. That store was a Jitney Jungle from the time the center was built until it became Winn Dixie upon the buyout. The Kroger was on the other side of the "L" several doors down from the former McRae's department store anch...

Re: Pensacola Albertsons: Going, Going...
I know the status of two of the Pensacola stores as of this past Friday, April 10. The 9th Avenue and Bayou Boulevard store remains vacant with no signs of remodeling. The Nine Mile Road store has reopened as a Publix with fairly light remodeling. New paint, removal of obvious Albertson's decor them...

Re: A&P stores, Princeton, WV
I think this is a Save-A-Lot floor design. I have seen it in several stores that are not in former A&P's.

I think this may have an F.W. Woolworth store. There were several along the Main Line.

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Tone's Spices (in little tiny plastic jars) still show up as a full-line assortment at many independent markets in south Alabama and northwest Florida. I think all of the Tone lines went to ACH. French's, Durkee's, and Tone's, among others, were included. Coincidentally, the Mrs. Tucker's shortening...

Re: Britt's Department Store
Several of those early 1990's Newberry openings occurred. Of course, they were "in name only". They were absolutely identical with McCrory stores of the time. It was strange because the Newberry name was not particularly known in some of the markets where this took place. A former Winn Dix...

Re: Pic-n-Save/Setzers
In Madison, FL, the long-running Pic N' Save on U.S. 90 (closed in the 1990's bankruptcy) was in a building which once also included a Setzer's supermarket. The mosaic tile entry floor bearing "Setzer's" remained into the 1990's. Though Setzer's was acquired by Food Fair and many stores be...

Re: Britt's Department Store
The longtime Newberry's Department Store in downtown Birmingham, AL, was for a time in the late 1960's-early 1970's changed over to the Britt's banner. It later switched back to Newberry's. Observers from the time have stated that the store faltered a bit as Britt's...because of the unfamiliarity. I...

Re: Western Auto
From the 1960's until at least the late 1970's, Western Auto also had a catalog...much like Sears but without clothing other than the occasional hunting togs. It featured auto parts, furniture, appliances (large and small), electronics, dishes, toys, gifts, etc. Like Sears, the merchandise was deliv...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida
I agree that the Nebraska Avenue store in Tampa, FL is a rebuild and not a re-do. I, too, remember its having the center doors and more of the Publix black marble. It is definitely the location I was remembering, but I haven't been by there in a number of years. It had been redone at the time, but i...
