The very first couple shots of the double Marina - there's a sign that made me laugh...because Daniel has a shot of a very similar sign. Being a fellow Safeway freak, I got a kick out of it.

Once again, this is Daniel's find:

The former Marina Safeway in Orange, Va kickstarted my interest. My memories of shopping there are very vague - I remember the mayflies buzzing around the grapes and the round grocery belts. When I lived with my grandmother, she rarely shopped there, opting instead for the newer A&P on the outsk...

I love, love, love the Mick-or-Mack. That is a true relic. Lynchburg would be an interesting city to include. It's a Kroger town. The store in Madison Heights only recently had its 60's era signage removed. The city is really just starting its urban renewal efforts so there would be lots of older lo...

I look at this building and think car dealership.

No logic here - it just looks like one we've got in Culpeper that's still up and running.

I can't say why I like them. It's just something so mundane but such a shared common experience. Seeing some of the 70's and 80's interiors of these stores really takes me back to going to Big Y or SuperFresh with my mom and grandma.

Ok, so the ones I remember the most are Dart and Drugfair. Dart had a long history, and was bought out in most locations by People's Drug, which also has a long history. And then CVS swooped in and bought everything out. I don't know as much about Drugfair. Looking at old newspaper ads it was more l...

I know that many of the Northern Virginia Grand Unions shared shopping center space with Kmart stores. The Stores at Tysons Corner and Fairfax has GU stores until I guess the early 80's. I don't ever remember going to a Grand Union, but Dcgrocery has lots of pictures of the locations.

Super Kroger restaurants?

The very first "super" grocery store I ever remember seeing was the big Kroger in Hopkinsville, KY. This would have been new in about 82-83-84. It had a full-service restaurant inside that looked a lot like the old Kmart cafeteria. Am I dreaming or was this common during this era for the c...

I saw an old ad once...wish I still had it. It protrayed 7-11 as a wholesome place where Mommy could send little Mary with the money in the envelope to pick up some bread, milk and candy. then the nice clerk would put the change in the envelope, pat Mary on the head and send her out in the big scary...

I'd lean toward it being a cooperative. This was the only location I've ever heard of.

Still looking for a build on the pictured Culpeper Safeway. There was an older location from the early 50's. I don't know if it was modified or rebuilt.

I'll have to check out the location in Luray. I didn't know about the one burning down in Fredericksburg, but with typical Charlottesville short-sightedness, I very rarely go to the 'burg unless it involves Carl's. Woodstock, VA (in the Valley) has a great old Marina that's now a Ben Franklin. Their...
