Re: Why was A&P so committed to being in Connecticut?

Connecticut has a number of distinct submarkets--Hartford and New Haven, for example, are very different places, but the state is relatively affluent and despite very little population growth different parts have attracted new chains over time: For example, Shop-Rite has returned to the Hartford ar...

Former long running Pick-n-Pay at 14601 St Clair Ave in Cleveland is a funeral home.

Early (1957) Centennial A&P in Wickliffe, Ohio has been an electronics business for many years.

Re: White Front Stores

Just a postscript to an earlier post here---White Front was owned by Interstate Department Stores which also owned Topps which was in the Northeast and Midwest. Interstate also owned a large number of small town department stores which predated their owning these discount chains. Topps was more appa...

Re: NEW: Memphis TN 1917-1990

Interesting that Jitney Jungle was there for a very short time. They remained in the Mississippi Delta (places like Greenwood) that were not too far from Memphis until Winn-Dixie bought them in the 90s. National entered the market by buying Montesi's, which had 9 stores and a warehouse, in 1955. It ...

I found an old newspaper image from the 50s. The Hagerstown Food Fair was the Philly chain.

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

Now, for National. True to form, the chain emerged in Peoria fairly late and fairly scrappily, opening its first stores by 1960...and at least two of them were conversions from other grocers. 3127 N University St was originally a Piggly Wiggly, and the building still bears an interesting loop-shape...

Are you sure the 1958 Food Fair is the Philly chain rather than the DC-based on that Grand Union bought?

Re: NEW: Duluth and Superior, 1925/30 to present

National had a division in Duluth with stores as far east as Marquette, MI, so there should be an old distribution center somewhere which probably stuck around until the late 60s/early 70s. Even after being consolidated with Minneapolis, it ranged as far as Iron Mountain. Minneapolis was one of thei...

Re: Kroger in Vermont?

St. Albans is considered a remote part of Vermont, away from any populous part of New England. It's also long been the poorest parts of Vermont. Its pretty unlikely they would have expanded there. DeKalb is a county in Georgia. Until recently, it had a small part of Atlanta proper and a small number...

Re: NEW: Little Rock, 1925-2021

The Nationals were part of their Memphis division which ran ‘55-‘67. They also had stores in Nashville. The Division began with an acquisition in Memphis, followed by another one in Nashville. It looks like the Little Rock stores wer new builds during the early years. I came across an old govt repor...
