Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

I believe the store at 6001 N. Nebraska Avenue (U.S. 41) in Tampa, FL, is an example of a 1940's store still in use as a Publix today. The last time I was by there, it had been updated, but the building was still original, similar to the one in Orlando now a camera shop. The wings (or the earlier cen...

Re: IGA Foodliner

Foodliner was a name used by the IGA organization with accompanying sign and ad packages. More recently they promoted IGA Plus. Many stores affiliated with IGA remain highly independent (no pun intended). Unlike some organizations, there is not much uniformity...particularly in smaller stores. Some ...

Re: Cleveland, Ohio: Former Fast Food?

Possibly a Dunkin' Donuts. They had some with the corner mansard and full windows. That would fit the area.

Re: Pantry Pride

IIRC, some of the Setzer's stores eventually became part of the Pic 'N Save drug/discount chain. These stores were like mini discount stores with pharmacies and a substantial grocery department (no meat or produce). I think these were mostly stores that had been replaced with newer Food Fair or Pant...

Pylon Sign Returns to Winn-Dixie

A Winn-Dixie store in downtown Jacksonville, FL is sporting a pylon sign. It's sort of a back to the future kind of look for a supermarket; much different that their recent bland designs. Photos are on the Supermarket News website's photo gallery today. This is also a departure from the new Florida ...

Re: Wag's Restaurants (1976-1988)

Wag's continued under the original name for a brief period under Marriott's stewardship. The Shoney's connection came when Marriott made the dramatic decision to abandon the family restaurant business that was its major heritage. Many of the former Wag's units were sold to Shoney's franchisees. Init...

Re: In-Store Pharmacies

Schuster's Department Store in Milwaukee, WI, had a pharmacy in the 1940's. They had an extensive line of Schuster's brand drug products as well. It was Milwaukee where I think I have seen an ad for Sears having a pharmacy.

Re: Strange (very small) Kmart format

Lake Wales, FL, had a store like this. It was closed in the first round of bankruptcy closings. The stores almost had the feel of the new standalone Dollar General stores, albeit in a somewhat larger, more well-stocked format. This style building was often placed on a lot in a lesser desirable comme...

In-Store Pharmacies

What in-store pharmacies are you aware of in defunct discount stores and department stores? I know that the J.M. Fields operation had pharmacies in many stores, also Gemco/Memco. I believe the Herald Square Macy's once had pharmacies, and IIRC, Sears operated pharmacies in some of their big city sto...

Re: Old Department Store Restaurants

I should have been a little more clear. The Bradford Houses were in later generation Grant City stores; however, they did often appear in regular Grant stores in regional shopping centers in both urban and suburban areas. Many of these, built right before the Grant City rollout, were identical to th...

Re: Old Department Store Restaurants

W.T. Grant had the Bradford House Restaurants and Skillet Coffee Shops. Both had sit-down operations at many locations. Some of the Bradford Houses were cafeterias but not all. These were pretty good place to eat at the time.

Re: WinCo interiors

Hy-Top comes from the Federated Group, Arlington Heights, Illinois. They are also the source for Parade and Red & White. Red & White was once a good-sized group of independent grocery stores, usually in rural areas and small towns. There are a few stores still using the name. Some sell the l...

Re: Former A&P Sav-a-Center, Charlotte NC

This was indeed one of the Sav-A-Center interior packages, an early one. The colors have been changed; most Sav-A-Center signage and decor involved green and white with touches of yellow here and there. The phrase "The Farm" as seen in the produce department was common not only to the Sav-...

Re: Kroger Superstores

There is a Kroger superstore still operating in Pearl, MS, a suburb of Jackson. It has had some exterior paint changes and interior updates but is still the basic superstore. It has been slated for replacement but seems to be in a "holding" pattern. There is a nearby very up-to-date store....

Re: Pensacola, FL: Former A&P and Winn-Dixie?

A&P exited Pensacola by 1995. They had long since closed the Futurestore on Olive Road, maintaining the 2 Centennials 'til the end. In addition to the one off New Warrington Road, there was a free-standing Centennial on 12th Avenue. It is still there as an Early Childhood Center. A Save-A-Lot br...
