A&P in Washington State was pretty much located in Seattle, Tacoma and Bremerton (at least I think it was in Bremerton). Anyway, they were here until about 1974. Some if not all the Tacoma locations became Manlys supermarkets (if memory serves correctly, I was only 13 at the time). I don't know...

I am wondering if anyone know where the first supermarket was that had a full service in-store deli. I think Kroger had them in their first superstores, so that would go back to the early '70s. But the real explosion of delis definitely didn't come until the mid to late '80s. Now... how about those...

There was also a location in Silverdale, WA which I believe was a Food Pavilion store. It is no longer a Fred Meyer but it I don't think it is a food store. This store became a Best Buy in 2001 after being vacant for a while after Fred Meyer left. The Silverdale store even had an electronics depart...

The only news that I know of about Larry's is that there are "un-named" parties interested. I don't know if that means it will be split up or if one company will buy it. Rumors I have heard is that perhaps Bellingham, WA based Haggen will buy the Tukwila store and turn it into a TOP Foods...

I did a little googling and found this reference in an FTC report from 1976 (that lists Elizabeth Dole as one of the commissioners!): "Other significant litigation activity by the Commission included acceptance of four consent orders (Pay 'n Pak Stores, Fred Meyer, Inc., Baza'r, Inc., and Paci...

I've heard ads in the morning on KIRO radio that say something to the effect of "contrary to what you may have heard, Larry's Markets are still here and fully stocked"... so what's the latest? Their traffic must really be suffering from all the people thinking they're already out of busine...

Another good site is the University of Washington Libraries' Digital Collections at http://content.lib.washington.edu/cgi-bin/advsearch.exe -- there are lots of photos from Bellevue in the '60s and '70s as well as Southcenter Mall.

I know that there were Red & White stores here in the Seattle area during the '40s and '50s... some of them may have even lasted a little longer than that. Most of them that I am aware of changed over to the Shop-Rite banner in the early '60s.

I believe that there may have also been one more of these stores in Washington in Snohomish. The Safeway at 111 112th St. E., just east of Pacific Avenue in Parkland, was converted to the Super Food Barn format in the late '80s before being closed for good a couple of years later. After a spell as ...

Many people don't know but virtually all of the store brand colas are basically Royal Crown/Cott ...who make the syrups and/or the sodas themselves. Doesn't Shasta make quite a few of them as well? I remember seeing Western Family soda having the same style of product codes stamped on the bottom of...

The former Alfie's Fish and Chips location looked almost exactly like the photo Dave posted, BTW. A Google search shows that there are some (apparently independently owned) restaurants still using the Alfie's name. I wonder if they share this building style as well and if there was some relationship...

Alfie's Fish and Chips

How about Alfie's Fish and Chips? Researching a building on Sixth Avenue here in Tacoma, Wash. (that was recently demolished by the way), I found that it was formerly an Alfie's location, built in 1969. It had a pretty distinctive design, with a mansard roof, a white exterior and two large front win...

Speaking of Rhodes, I know the Tacoma stores became Liberty House. I have also heard here on this board that they were NOT related to the Seattle Rhodes. How did that happen being Seattle and Tacoma are in close proximity? When Seattle Rhodes became Lamonts, I was a still a child, so I really don't...
