One of the flickr-ites has some good shots of the new Granada Hills Target, as well as a nice shot of the overhead sign. Since its not my account, I'm going to post a general link to their account, since there are many excellent photos of the retail scene in So Cal. I assume our board member Tortuga...

While the new store looks nice, I still have some attachment to that old Gemco look. Oh well, at least I got a chance to photograph it before it was gone (thanks again for that well timed heads up.) I do find it interesting that Target seems to be going more... department-store-esque with these two ...

but there is a new-build Rite Aid going in a block east with a new Tesco -- two vacancies might spell the end of this center. I didn't see any listings for the old shopping center on the city's planning department web site but there is a listing for the Tesco center. Loopnet has a listing for the R...

I should add that I think that Fullerton store is on borrowed time. The center features this former Thrifty http://www.flickr.com/photos/7591905@N07/492047452/ and some other shops http://www.flickr.com/photos/7591905@N07/492047452/ ... but there is a new-build Rite Aid going in a block east with a ...

I remember a lot of Godfathers pizza's coming into SoCal right after Sambos closed. Most were in the Sambos spots. They didn't last long and Baker's Square moved in soon after. I do remember one location still open a few years ago in San Diego, on Midway. One such location at Moody St. and Lincoln ...

Re: Raisin's Markets locations in 1958

Raisin Markets, far before my time, but I do recall some of these older Alpha Beta locations. Rosecrans and Studebaker, Norwalk. That's no Asian market - its a former grocery store that I was wondering about! The store is divided (unequally) into a Sketchers Outlet and a Rent-A-Center. The Sketchers...

One thing though, I don't recall exactly where it was, but it was around Cypress or LaPalma, I believe... from early on, I recall the Drug Emporium we used to shop at had a vacant store in the same center, and I don't exactly remember how I found out, I think there might have been a sign on one of ...

Speaking of Thrifty Ice Cream Availability... There is an ice cream counter in a Shell Gas Station in Gila Bend, AZ. I don't have photographs, but the building does have a small rectangular sign on the exterior of the building with a red "Thrifty Ice Cream" logo. This store sells ice cream...

Submariner: Let me flip this around upon you: are there any chains that you have a particular interest in? I've spent some time down here in my corner of the world (where LA County and the OC meet)... What are you on the wild road of store hopping for? Old grocery? Modern? Anything? There is some of...

Re: Albertsons Store being remodeled by Stater Brothers

When Albertsons entered the Southern Claifornia area they did so by buying the Greater All American Markets in 1964. 7814 E Firestone Blvd. in Downey was an All American Market at least as early as June 6, 1959. I will follow up by adding that some other hints to the age of this store have shown up...

Remodeling at Stater Bros., former Albertsons, Downey, CA

The Stater Bros. store on Firestone Blvd in Downey, CA is undergoing a rather extensive remodel. This is a former Albertsons blue-gray that was divested to Stater in 1999 - and it hasn't seen much change until a couple weeks ago. The remodeling process is starting to uncover some remains of an earli...

Ads I would like to see: Lucky: And, of course, I would love to see any Lucky ad with the fabulous Stephanie Edwards. It's probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I think that Albertsons not bringing her along led to some of their post-merger sales problems. Here's one with her sporting Moll...

Re: Lucky Stores-HQ Razed, Nor. Cal. Distribution Center Vac

.snip. I believe that its sister Lucky facility in southern California was in Buena Park. Lucky's So. Cal. operation was headquartered in Buena Park, along with a distribution center. Lucky also had a distribution center in Irvine. The dairy processing portion of Buena Park was sold to Dean Foods o...
