Re: 1980 Discount Store Directory

Just look at that Top 10-only two of them are still viable companies. Really the only two choices most consumers have nowadays. And yes K-Mart still exists but can you really count it and technically K-Mart Corp. went away with the merger with Sears.

Re: "Grandma" at 125

The things to keep in mind is that even A&P's nostalgia value diminished over time. Their decline began in the 50s and they missed the boat on just about every trend from that point onward. Two of the biggest problems they had (both self-inflicted wounds I might add) were they kept way too many...

Re: "Grandma" at 125

I think Super Fresh initially extended into the Philadelphia area as well. It was a joint labor/management venture where the employees got some say in how the stores were run and a % of either store sales and/or profits if labor costs were kept below a certain level. In exchange for that, the unions...

"Grandma" at 125

There's a current E-Bay listing for a 1984 issue of an A+P employee magazine highlighting the company's 125th. anniversary celebration. One of the photos accompanying the listing is a chart of the various divisions and store counts at that time. Found it very interesting and illustrative at how much...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

I remember those DTS registers at Price Chopper as well but I recall the digital readout being on the side of the machine facing the customer as you stood in the checkout lane. I believe the readout was in orange. Don't ever remember that pole set-up you're speaking of. Maybe it was just the configu...

Re: Short-lived grocery stores

We had (in the Albany, NY area) the very last Grand Union opened and (as far as I know) the only one of it's type ever completed (there was at least one other near Marist College in the Poughkeepsie area that was being built but never opened). The one that did open had about 6 months from Grand Ope...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

Just thought of another one that I've had questions about. Line 2169 Middleburg Heights, Oh-I visited this one a little over ten years ago and at the time the attached store was vacant. I'm presuming it was a grocery store at one time. I see the opening date for the K-Mart was sometime in 1969. Was ...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

Thank you for your suggestions, TW-Upstate NY! However, I checked the opening date of the Dickson City store and October 18 appears to be correct. Here's a newspaper clipping from that day: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/43496244/the_timestribune/ I stand corrected and I thank you very much! But I...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

WOW! Quite impressive indeed. Nearest store to me now is White Plains, NY. And if I may, a few modifications: Lines 1954+1955 the Amsterdam, NY stores: the first one was a former Grants and opened in either late '75 or sometime in '76 and was replaced by the store on line 1955-a Super K right down t...

Re: Red & White stores

Does anyone else think that Lawrenceville store looks like a possible former A+P or is it just me? That brick front looks like it could've been added to make the store an A+P Centennial model and the front windows look like an A+P configuration of that era. Also the oval sign out front could easily ...

Re: Old-School Supermarket Meat Departments

Visible meat-cutting areas are hardly a thing of the past in my area and are quite common at local Price Chopper and Hannaford stores.

Re: What are some of the reasons why supermarket history is so interesting?

Some of my best childhood memories are of going to the grocery store. As I got older and some of the stores my parents frequented went away, I just had to find out why. That's what got me into the nuts and bolts of the whole topic and then you take into consideration the architecture and how grocery...

Re: Older KFC Locations

267 N. Main St Gloversville, NY. Closed as a KFC in the very early '90's and was then a very short lived chicken and ribs place and eventually became a Chinese restaurant which closed some time ago. Just took this earlier this afternoon so this is how the building currently stands.

And both very easily identified with "FF" still prominently displayed on each building.
