Re: Penny (1 cent) Gum Ball Machines

In my childhood (1970's) there was a great family-owned convenience store down the street from my house that had a HUGE row of penny and nickel candy. It was an outright scandal the day they had to raise the penny stuff to 2 cents and the nickel stuff to 7. But the best part about it was that I was ...

Re: Musicland/Defunct Record Store Chains Other Than Tower

In the Northwest, we had DJ's Sound City, originating in Southcenter in Seattle. They had 22 stores in four states. Their logo was obnoxiously huge, which made them cool, I guess.

"DJ" was apparently Dick Justham, who passed away in May 2008.

Re: Original Safeway Interiors in Colorado?

Safeway's Denver region is pretty well remodeled over. The ones that don't have the Lifestyle format yet have the interior of the Olympia, WA Marina store (you replied in that thread). See this thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=523 for more information and photos of st...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

There's a few of these along Colorado's front range still. Some of these were converted into Good Times Burgers (Loveland and Fort Collins, specifically.)

Jack in the Box exited the market years ago, but just re-entered Denver.

Re: Dillon's/Kroger in Wichita KS

Just an update...The Dillon's that started this thread is indeed still open. I was in there Saturday. The interior is modern, of course. Same package as in a couple of other Dillon's around town, and even the Syracuse, UT Smith's. Also, the Dillon's I noted in the Sandy's commercial (which later rem...

Hilarious news item this past week. Dog walked into a SMITH'S (Utah, I believe). Dog walked directly to the pet food aisle, grabbed a bone, and walked out. Cameras got the entire "robbery" on tape !! Murray, Utah, specifically. Link to story (with video): http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&s...

Kmart Chef

I'd never heard of them, but a friend of mine brought up to me an attempt by Kmart to run a freestanding hamburger chain. From somewhere on Wikipedia (he sent the comments, but not the link): Kmart Chef restaurants were a small chain of free-standing fast-food restaurants owned by Kmart, started in ...

I did something like this once to a guy who used an image of a White Castle from my site in his by linking it in (I caught it based on my site hit stats, which were unusually large for the image file, so I tracked it back.) Below my image, he had some crazy "WASSUP THIS IS WHERE WE KICKED IT OL...

Re: Shopping Centers in Popular Culture

"How to Beat the High Cost of Living", from 1980 (but shot in 1979), is perfect for this. It revolves around three women who try to rob a ball of money (promotional contest) in a mall. It was shot in Oregon at Eugene's Valley River Center. I haven't seen it in years, but if memory serves, ...

Re: Mervyns

The Minnesota stores were the result of Dayton-Hudson taking over the Carson Pirie Scott locations around the Twin Cities. They turned those spaces into their "Mervyn's California" concept, which was intended to give Mervyn's a brighter, colorful, more fun atmosphere.
