Ukrop's in Richmond, VA
Ukrop's, our local large grocery chain, is closing one of their older stores at the end of the month. It was built in 1975 and is still pretty much unaltered from the exterior, though it has been somewhat expanded over the years, taking over adjacent space that was once an independent drugstore. Thi...

Re: The New Farmer Jack
The Farmer Jack name is currently on 75 stores in Michigan. After wage concessions, A&P is sticking by these super stores. They are expected to breakeven this year, a good sign. Farmer Jack is a Michigan supermarket institution and an important part of the A&P family of companies. Other pos...

...and then tried Dollar stores (called Dollar Zone)... For a while, there was a Dollar Zone on Forest Hill Avenue in Richmond in part of a former Colonial Store, and about two miles down the street there was a dollar store branded as a McCrory's in an old Standard Drug. As I recell, they both arri...

I remeber going to the PharMor in the Harbison area of Columbia, SC back in the mid-'90's and it seemed to me that the one near me in Richmond was open for a good while after that, but without any advertising that I noticed - I rmember driving by and being surprised it was still open because I hadn'...

I recently acquired some old city directories and telephone books for Richmond, VA and in the process of going through them have detemined that at least one of the first 7-11 stores in Richmond is still serving as a 7-11 (maybe a couple of others, but it's the one in my old neighborhood - I haven't ...

A&P to Super Fresh/Farmer Jack
In Richmond, the last gasp of A&P was the conversion of some their remaining stores to Super Fresh and some to Farmer Jack. There didn't seem to be particular rhyme or reason to which was which - size, age, neighborhood/demographics really didn't make a difference. Did they do this anywhere else...

Re: Name that store...
The front of the pylon has what look like spots for 6 or 7 letters. Does that provide more clues? I thought about the six spots on the pylon would fit "K-R-O-G-E-R" nicely, but then there's the seventh spot just above the canopy and the two spots under the canopy, so I didn't want to say ...

Safeway International
Back in the 1970's, when Safeway was still a big player in Richmond, VA, they opened a store on West Cary Street that was called "Safeway International" (in common usage, folks called it the "Intenational Safeway"). As I recall, it had "Safeway Intenational" spelled acr...

... I'd almost guess that it had maybe been a car dealership rather than a supremarket, but there's no evidence of service bays ... It really looks like an auto dealership to me. The service areas in a lot of old dealerships are in separate buildings, and the lack of parking doesn't necessarily rul...

... Hannaford was a New England chain that expanded southward in the 1990's which was purchased in 1998 by Delhaize, owner of Food Lion, who kept the stronger name in Virginia and North Carolina alive with FTC concerns (Although with current market conditions with Wal-Mart, it may have been smarter...
