Re: Thunder Bay, ON chain grocery/supermarket history, 1975-2019

Here's a rare photo I stumbled upon. It's the A&P store on 570 Syndicate Ave. S. as it appeared in 1984, just before closure. The store still bore its original 1963-era modernist exterior, but had been updated with the newer pill-shaped sign and logo. The photo itself appeared in a Thunder Bay b...

Re: NEW: Syracuse, 1925-2020

I've only had a chance to briefly glance over the work, but it's great to see another city in the Great Lakes watershed done! Loblaws faded away with nary a trace, here...they didn't keep the stores going as Bells franchises like they did in Buffalo. Some of the stores morphed into Price Chopper, bu...

Re: NEW: Belleville ON, 1932-2006

Say, check out the late '70s Safeway at 305 North Front Street! The building hasn't changed much (it still has its natural brick colouring and display windows), and the canopy features a "bridge" that extends over the adjacent parking lot entrance. Never saw a store like that before!

Re: Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

Per Chain Store Age, 115 Walnut was a Kroger that opened in 1954. Per newspapers: 333 S 3rd: Montgomery Ward 600 S. 3rd: McMillan's Sporting Goods (late 1960s/early 1970s, no listing in the 1960 city directory, which is the latest one I can access right now). Thanks for the detective work, guys!! 1...

And two down the road...

138 W Honey Creek Pkwy (when I saw this store from afar, I almost thought it was an A&P Centennial at first):

Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

Last week, I braved the US-Canadian border to go on a seven-state trip to Nashville, Tennessee and back. One of the cities I passed through on the way was Terre Haute, Indiana, famous home of Columbia House and their "12 CDs for a penny" offers...and this city had a wealth of mysterious ex...

Re: New location list: Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge

Oh, joy! Eyeballing the Waterloo-Kitchener table, I noticed something strange: There are five Food Basics locations listed in the two cities, and not a single one of them had a known identity prior to Food Basics. Were some of them conversions from other retailers? Or were all of them new-build stor...

Re: Vintage IGA Daniels, VA

Um, the location in your link isn't in Virginia. It's in West Virginia. Saying that the census-designated place of Daniels, WV is in Virginia is like saying that Old Orchard Beach, Maine is in Massachusetts. As luck has it, I'm familiar with this area, and this building housed a Galaxy Foods-affilia...

The 1930s Dominion site at 938 2nd Ave E is a must-see...it's in a single-story mid-block storefront with Art Deco brick detailing, including a pattern of three recessed squares on the upper facade. I wonder if Dominion commissioned the architecture itself?

Re: Former A&P in Plymouth, MA?

That building does look fairly A&P-like! But given the specifics, I'm going to have to say this wasn't one... * The building is easily 50,000 square feet in footprint, and doesn't bear any traces of being expanded. That's far in excess of what a 1950s-1970s supermarket would be. * The ends of th...

Re: Northville and Plymouth, MI chain grocery/supermarket locations

Here's a great video link I found: Plymouth Michigan, Vintage 1969 This is 6 minutes of amateur 8mm footage shot in and around Plymouth, with many signs, buildings, and vehicles visible. There's a nice pan over an A&P Centennial (almost surely the one at 1050 Ann Arbor Road, now renovated beyond...

Safeway, Cranbrook, BC, 1981

Recently, some 1981-vintage pictures of a Safeway store in Cranbrook, British Columbia were posted on Paul Niedermayer's Curbside Classic blog: https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/vintage-snapshots-and-photography/cohort-pick-of-the-day-qotd-what-year-is-it/ These are great photos! The store itself...
