Re: Another Red and White Store closing

Wood paneling was not uncommon, especially in small, independent operations. A local IGA comes to mind as well as still extant Village Supermarket in Shalimar, FL. Also, many of the Gibson's Discount Centers with full (produce and meat market) grocery departments had wood paneling. The heyday for th...

Re: Two different "Sav-on" chains?

There is no connection. Albertson's got the Sav-on name with the American Stores merger/buyout. Kroger just used it here and there.

Re: Why has there never been an A&P bankruptcy?

The colonial letters logo referenced in the photograph was commonly used during the same period the circle was employed during the centennial building era from 1959 to the early 1970's. Many street signs had this lettering while the building had a circle in the gable at the center. The red circle of...

Re: Chain Drugstores with Operating Lunch Counters

I don't know if it's still adjacent to the existing CVS or not, but the Eckerd coffee shop at Wabash Shopping Center in Lakeland, FL, was still open in the 1990's as an independent operation. It had simply been walled off from the drugstore.

Re: Rexall Drugs

There are dozens of unaffiliated Rexall stores left around the country. Liggett Rexall in Dania, FL, comes immediately to mind. Many stores still sport the signs; some use Rexall in their current name. The subsequent owners of the trademark in the U.S., Rexall Sundown Vitamins, allow its use with at...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

The sign in the shot is clearly a Food Fair sign with Food on top line on four squares and Fair below likewise. There is no doubt it is Food Fair and not Winn Dixie. I am pretty sure it was filmed in Miami. All would have been present at the time, especially Royal Castle and Food Fair. I didn't make...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

While watching the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger, I noticed a fleeting glimpse of a Food Fair sign and building. The surrounding scenes also show a Kentucky Fried Chicken in a store-front type location and a Royal Castle hamburger restaurant. The shot is quick, but it is unmistakably a Food Fair....

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos

A&P was a fairly marginal player in the Tampa Bay area with far fewer locations than Winn Dixie or Publix. In its heyday, A&P had stores pretty much all over the state. As they retreated, many fair-sized cities (Sarasota comes to mind) had only one location. The Family Mart experiment briefl...

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos

Definitely a Kash 'n Karry design. There are others like it in other markets in Florida. This was one of the attempts to jazz up the store design. Previously, the Kash 'n Karry stores were vanilla strip center fronts. These were nice stores at the time inside and out.

Re: Store Brand Products

While shopping in a C&S Food World store in Mary Esther, FL, today, I noticed the Best Yet Dishwasher Detergent also bore the name Bright. A number of years back (late 1970's), Kroger used Bright on bleach, detergent, and possibly some dishwashing and other products. Even old store brands never ...

Re: Gold Triangle (Florida)

The Gold Triangle stores were discount department stores owned by Federated Department Stores. In many areas, the Gold Circle name was used, but most of the Florida stores carried the GT banner. They were sold to other discounters or liquidated. The successor company is of course today's Federated/M...

Re: Pic-n-Save/Setzers

The Pic 'N Save associated with Setzer's had no connection with the MacFrugal's that was absorbed by Big Lots. My post above outlines the Jacksonville operation's defense of its trademark for its stores located only in the Southeast (FL & GA).

Re: Fred Meyer gas stations signage

The logo was designed to unify Kroger's various convenience store operations. I live in Northwest Florida, home of their Tom Thumb stores. The logo appears on Coffee Central and Soda Central cups without the individual chain name so that the items can be used in all. From a history perspective, this...

Re: Former Kroger Stores in Jackson MS

There was never a Kroger at Jackson Square. The supermarket started as Giant Foods of America supplied by Malone & Hyde. It later became a large Jitney Jungle store with some specialty departments (many years before the Premier introduction) then closed fairly soon. Jackson Square's decline date...
