This was a somewhat common sign shape for Vons for a couple of years. As far as I could tell they never retrofitted any older stores and used it for just a short time. The logo was different then. The 'V' was capitalized and huge with smaller 'ons' in a very plain font.

My mom worked as a checker/booker keeper for the ABC Market on the corner of Vermont/Vernon before I was born and when I was young. The main office for ABC Markets according to her,was/is the Food4Less on Main and 52nd. If my memory serves me right, ABC Markets were converted into BOYS markets then...

The Tropicana store was definitely an old Safeway. It's one of those old stores that has made money over the years because it is the only supermarket near UNLV. It sells a lot of high margin liquor and convenience items. The Maryland Parkway/Twain store used to be a Mervyns. There was a smaller olde...

Another employee source indicated that Vons left Smoketree because of the IMPOSSIBLE landlord. Are you sure the Vons is larger than the Ralphs? I know for sure the Ralphs is just over 42,000 sq ft. Vons left Smoketree because the FTC forced them to sell the location. 100% fact. Ralphs may have enla...

Interestingly, the Vons at Rimrock Shopping Center (Palm Canyon Bl.) which replaced the Vons at Smoketree Shopping Center (Sunrise and Palm Canyon) has a very similar sloping front roof line BUT, is an original Vons new build and not Safeway. I know 100% this is not true. The Rimrock Vons was absol...

Jensen's was a new build in 1983 for Jensen's. I don't remember it ever being a Vons. The Vons on 111 in Palm Desert was originally a Safeway and one of the first stores in Southern California to be converted to the lifestyle format.

I will try to drive out there when I get back from vacation and take a picture. It's driving me crazy now... lol.

If the Reseda location is the same one I am thinking about it was a Boys in the early 80's when I first moved to L.A., closing sometime around 1985. My Credit Union office was located in Reseda and I used to drive by it all the time. Maybe I'm thinking of a different location but from the aerial pho...

19255 Vanowen, Reseda--JoAnn Fabrics - I vaguely remember this location as a Boys Market at one time, as well. 8450 Foothill Blvd, Sunland - I don't have any specific memory about this location but the sign was similar to what Boys used to use. The store on Ventura Blvd. was a Boys Continental so ma...

So Max Foods may be closing....... ......but there is a nice big sign on the store. Albertsons - Store Closing for Remodel. Hmm.....maybe they are going to relocate the Albertsons across the street? ............maybe they are converting to a Lucky? That would make sense. If I remember right the Max...

Alpha Beta in Palm Springs

I was looking at this photo in the Alpha Beta photo gallery: http://www.groceteria.com/alphabeta/gallery/images/20.jpg It's listed as 'unidentified' but is the Alpha Beta in Palm Springs, CA. Ralphs took over this store and wanted to tear it down and build a larger store on the property. There was a...

I lived in that area for a short time in the early 1980s. The former Crawfords store was operating as a Market Basket at the time. Accross the street was another shopping center that had an Albertson's in it (which closed shortly thereafter). If this shopping center is across from the old Crawfords ...

Albertsons, 140 W 40th St, San Bernardino

Moderator note: This is split from another thread: Shopped the Albertsons in San Bernardino CA today. It is located @ 140 W 40th St San Bernardino 92407. Clerk stated that it was just announced that the store will close 8/1. Site never truly recovered from the last labor dispute. Shoppers began sho...

Last time I was there I went into the Casa Ley market in PVR. The company is 49% owned by Safeway and I was surprised to find that they carry some of Safeway's house brands. I have never seen the Soriana market.

A little off topic but are these the same Apple Markets franchised by Unified Grocers like the one in Canoga Park?
