Rite Aid ate up many through the years, including K&B and Big B (Harco) in 1997. Neither of these has been highly successful. K&B was a major New Orleans staple, and they just couldn't bear not to have the purple bags they had. A case in point; Lafayette, LA had 6 K&B stores, but now onl...

Natchez, MS has one of these too. It's called Sports Center now, and was a superstore prototype.

New Iberia, LA: Simoneaud's on Admiral Doyle Dr. This store was expanded before A&P left, mainly to the left of the store, but is still open. Strangely, Simoneaud's other location in New Iberia is in an abandoned Kroger Family Center (using only half of the store; the other half is a bowling all...

My mother and aunt worked at the Danville, IL 'plaza' when it opened in 1964. The store was not built in the normal straight configuration, as most Kmarts were. The store sat to the side of the lot, and the grocery store was built in what would have been the front of the store, making it an L config...

My doctor's office is in a shopping center that once housed a Woolworth's and many other stores. The doctor's office itself was a colonial A&P, albeit heavily remodeled. You can still see from the outside what it used to be.

Brookshire Grocery Company had a couple of cafeterias in the late 70's/early 80's. One I know for sure was in Shreveport, LA, as the end of Shreve City Shopping Center. I think the other one was in Tyler, TX, but I'm not sure.

You might want to check the captions of the store. The item you list as "old speaker" is not a speaker. Those are air vents. Kmart installed them from the 60's to the early 80's. Any Kmart older than 25 years will have them throughout the store. If you walk up to one when the air should be...

There were actually plain variants of the Wal Mart signage before the western standardization. That signage only appeared on their first 200 stores, before what the company referred to as 'Concept 79' opened in Pine Bluff, AR, which was both the exterior and interior prototype for most of the stores...

I'm really not sure, although I doubt it. Like I said before, most of the chains in DFW are more interested in bigger stores (50,000+ sq.ft.). The majority of these older stores were in the 30-45,000 range. Most Tom Thumb stores are huge by comparison. Some might be in use. I know some of the stores...

Dallas

When the Dallas division closed in 1987, it was split several ways; Some stores went to Winn-Dixie. Many went to Kroger. Brookshire Grocery Co. bought about 6-10. Several went to Tom Thumb. A few went to Minyard. 47 were never sold before closing. The majority of Marina and older stores had been pha...

Jewel T

Actually, Jewel T lasted into the 90's. There were quite a few stores in Texas that survived until being bought out by Save-A-Lot, most of which still exist, although S-A-L has moved them to stores that could support meat markets.

Texas leaps of faith......

It should be pointed out that many of the eastern chains that have jumped geographic regions to go to Dallas/Ft. Worth have failed.....in some cases miserably. Food Lion opened almost 100 stores in 1991 in the region from D/FW to Shreveport. Then came the Dateline story...which couldn't have hit the...

Luby's and Piccadilly

Actually, Luby's has been on a major retreat for some time. They have cut themselves in half, closing a good number of restaurants. Now Furr's in DFW and beyond, they still seem to do well. Piccadilly has been suffering from an identity crisis, somewhat brought on by the aforementioned Morrison's pu...

That looks like the Kensington Safeway. I got to visit that store when I was in DC in July 2005. Really small, but nice marina store.
