Re: Family Bargain Centers (New York)

Now that I've had time to think about it, the Herkimer store ended up being a Great American after they had moved from their previous location. As I recall, the stores were "bare bones" operations and not much to look at.

Re: Family Bargain Centers (New York)

Know this chain very well. They actually were pretty good stores. Didn't know they operated that many location especially outside of NY. If you don't have them already, here are four New York locations: -Johnstown (currently a large Dollar Tree and subdivided into several other smaller stores) , -Am...

Re: Great American

-Yes I do indeed mean State Route 7 in Oneonta-my error. I had referenced NY State Route 5 just above it. It was in a small strip along with a Carl's Drugs and W. T. Grant. Before Interstate 88, that was the route we took between NY and NE Pa. The Southside Mall store sadly became infamous in 1994 w...

Re: Great American

Corrections to this list are as follows: -Amsterdam-was a Chicago Market but also a former Loblaws and at one time was a discount operation of Chicago Markets called Bag 'N Save -Cooperstown-I seem to recall the 34 Chestnut St. location WAS a Great American as late as 1985. It is now Otsego County g...

Re: Great American

The former Fonda, NY location now belongs to the ages. The building has been demolished to make way for a new Cumberland Farms store to replace their aging mid-80's unit about a block away.

Re: Food Fair/ Pantry Pride in Kingston,NY?

Wow-I had no idea they had that many stores in the area. About the closest I got to any info. on the stores was an article from the Troy (NY) Record in 1976 about Price Chopper buying some leases but all I could conjure up was the headline-never could access the article. Couple of questions then: fi...

Re: JCPenney mall locations

Viewmont Mall along US Route 6 in Dickson City, Pa. (most people would refer to it as Scranton instead) is an example of a center located space. It was built in the mid to late '60's as one of the original anchors (along with Sears on one end and Grants on the other) as a two-story store. To my know...

Re: Food Fair/ Pantry Pride in Kingston,NY?

How extensive was their reach in New York? The reason I ask is because I recall a new build Pantry Pride in Schnectady (actually Niskayuna proper) as part of a JM Fields combo in the Mohawk Mall which was built I'm going to say early 70's. Don't know when they left but the JM Fields eventually becam...

Re: Great American

I remember one of those gas stations. It was in the parking lot of one of their stores in a very small shopping plaza (3 stores) along NY Route 7 just outside Oneonta. Rode by it a lot when I was a kid when we made numerous trips between Pa. and what is now home. I never made the connection. We move...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at

I don't have as varied a shopping history as some of you but a few Upstate NY names do come to mind: -P+C Foods-the recently bankrupt (again) Penn Traffic Company's flagship banner. Topps Friendly Markets bought the company and rebranded a number of the units and closed or sold off others -Save-Way ...

Groves, Tx.?!? Keep in mind I'm not doubting you in any way but what the heck were they doing down there? There must be a story behind that one.

Re: Barker's Department Stores

Add Oneonta, NY to the list. That store was located in the Pyramid Mall along NYS Route 7 on the outskirts of town. It began life as a White-Modell around '73 or so and became a Barker's a year or two later. It eventually became a Nichols and last I knew the entire mall structure is home to a medica...

Re: Great American

0ne on Pultney Street which was a former Loblaws and now a Salvation Army Thrift Store. That brings up something that I'd thought of earlier in the thread but didn't mention. I know of at least two others that were former Loblaws as well: Gloversville and Amsterdam which were formerly Chicago Marke...
