Liquor Barn has all but disappeared too. Only one that I know of remains in Whittier. Most of the Northern California locations eventually became BevMo stores. I think there may now be a new chain using this name; I saw a new store sporting the banner in Fresno about a year ago. Sounds like Food Ba...

Re: Old Safeway Cart Spotted

I saw this cart in a parking lot over the weekend. The first thing I noticed (apart from the "S" logo) was how small it was. It was about the size of a Thrifty Drug cart. Anybody have any ideas when this cart might have been used? Every Safeway I was ever in back in the day used those tal...

Looking at 2222 S Harbor Bl, that's where the Toys R Us was located. I doubt this buildnig was White Front, but there is a large empty lot it looks behind it. I remember that Toys R Us, I got some toys there when I was a kid on a trip to Disneyland. I came back to Anaheim for the first time in 20 y...

Cala at California and Hyde

What Kroger is doing seems like insanity to me. If they are closing pretty much ALL of Ralphs in NorCal and sniping off Cala/Bell stores one by one, what is the point of retaining a cherrypicked few? I recall someone saying in another thread that Ralphs was going to close their NorCal distribution c...

White Front Arches - any remaining?

I have been fascinated by White Front ever since I learned of thier existence (which was about 5 years ago) I know they were predominantly a western chain, but did they have any locations on the east coast? There were so many discount chains in the east back then, so I wouldn't blame them if they ch...

Re: Supermarkets in Malls

...Sometimes they survived malling, like the super markets at Westgate in Cleveland (although one moved to an outparcel) or the Grand Union that was at Prince George's Plaza.. I'm guessing that this reference is to Prince George's Plaza in Hyattsville MD, since it's kind of a unique name. At what p...

Kenny Rogers Roasters

I am not sure why this chain vanished so abruptly. The last location I was aware of was one on US Route 1 in Laurel Md. I believe it closed about ayear ago. The last time I checked the KRR website that location appared to be the only one listed. This list no location info currently on their website....

The interior PNS decor seems pretty similar from store to store. The photos of the now-closed San Jose store (link in an earlier post) looked like they could have been taken in the San Leandro location. At the San Leandro location, from what I have seen almost everything is priced the same as Safewa...

Pak and Save neglect

The last post brought to mind something I have wondered about: Is Safeway just letting Pak & Save dwindle away? It seems like there have been no new locations in years, and the existing ones seem to be kind of run down (even for a low-price market chain) Does Safeway just continue to operate the...

Safeway origins

On the topic of Safeway's origins; I find it interesting that in the Was. DC area, any articles or media reports about Safeway invariably refer Safeway as originally being called Sanitary. This is usually stated in such a way that it comes across as if Safeway were founded in DC and just branched ou...

San Leandro KFC Roast Beef Building

Thanks for the additional info on this location. I will see if they have microfiche for the San leandro newspaper at the local libraries. I am not familiar with any buildings with a sign like that around San Leandro. What part of town was it in? Street address/cross street? S.L. is kind of spread ou...

Sambos/Denny's Signage and Architecture

The post about "BJ's Kountry Kitchen" previously being a Denny's and maybe before that Sambo's brought to mind a topic I have long wondered about. From the vague memories I have of seeing Sambo's and from the few images I have found online, it seems like Sambo's was either somehow associat...

KFC Roast Beef- San Leandro

I'm curious, which San Leandro KFC was originally a Roast Beef restaurant? Is it still a KFC at all or something else? there's a "classic" KFC building on East 14th St near the Hayward border that is just rotting, after a stint as some other business. This is the building type with the pyr...

CMA/Levitz

Interesting to learn more about the history of that Levitz. I knew it had been some defunct grocery chain once upon a time, but I had no idea that there was another identity to the store before that! There's a Levitz in Santa Clara, CA, about 30 miles away, that has a similar vintage sign. It is by ...

Best Products/Catalogs

Best was very big in the Washington D.C. area, probably due Best being based in (relatively) nearby Richmond VA. I can think of at least four Best locations off the top of my head. In MD there were ones in New Carrollton, Greenbelt, Rockville, and Bethesda. We didn't have Service Merchandise, so Bes...
