For a while, it seemed like there were more surviving Burger Chef birdhouses than old Burger Chef buildings, at least around here. There was one strech of Hull Street Road, now developed with all of the usual retail suspects, where it appeared that the Burger Chef Birdhouse Man had visited every oth...

Soda fountains date back to the 20s and were largely gone by the early-to mid-70s... There are a handful of independent drugstores in Richmond and the immediate area that still have soda fountains. ...I've heard that People's still had a few in DC until a little later than that... When Peoples open...

Ok, so the ones I remember the most are Dart and Drugfair. Dart had a long history, and was bought out in most locations by People's Drug, which also has a long history. And then CVS swooped in and bought everything out. I don't know as much about Drugfair. Looking at old newspaper ads it was more ...

.., I wasn't aware of the Hancock relationship... Well, I was confusing Piece Goods with Fabric Warehouse, but there was a connection. Sort of. Piece Goods filed Chapter 11 in 1993 and was reorganized as Silas Creek Retail in 1995. Silas Creek Retail bought Northwest Fabrics in 1996 and went into i...

For some reason, I seem to recall that Peaches was originally out of Cincinnati. One of the local Peaches locations is still in operation as an independent music store, and it still seems to me to be a fairly large store - of course we thought it was huge when it originally opened back in the '70's....

Actually, Western Auto is not really a department store, but more of a auto parts/hardware store. Didn't Western Autos have a mix of merchandise beyond the obvious auto parts? Kinda like a smaller version of what ended up happening with Canadian Tire... It all depended on the Western Auto store. So...

Re: New Uses for Grocery Stores
...Does conversion to restaurants count? In my mind, no. There are scads of older stores in Richmond that are now restuarants, mostly predating the supermarket era. There are some supermarket spaces that have been subdivided into smaller spaces that might include a restaurant - and those aren't rea...

Re: New Uses for Grocery Stores
Eeh, this doesn't seem to fit anywhere else...but... When I was home this past week for the holidays, I drove by the place where I had my first job: the Cub Foods on Johnson Ferry Road in Atlanta (East Cobb), Georgia. Sadly, this store, like the other Cubs in Atlanta, is no longer open. However, th...
