Re: List of Detroit-area A&P stores from 1983

I suspect Saline was actually 465 EAST Michigan. There's an older looking shopping center at that address. Likely a typo in the ad. I think you're right. The A&P is now a thrift store if it was the large tenant on the far end; though a tenant elsewhere in the center seems to have inherited the ...

Re: List of Detroit-area A&P stores from 1983

So, none of these survived into the Farmer Jack era? I'm not sure what you see that implies that. Some of these locations no-doubt survived into the Farmer Jack era. The Lincoln Park store is even listed on this site as surviving till 2007. When A&P bought Farmer Jack, it was to bolster its exi...

List of Detroit-area A&P stores from 1983

While rifling through old newspapers for research, I was pleased this week to uncover a list of A&P stores that operated in the Detroit area, from the Northville Record of June 29, 1983! ap-detroit-83a.png I don't know if this is a complete list of stores. Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are conspicuous...

Re: New location list: Roanoke, 1920-2005

Ah, Roanoke. The city I came close to moving to eight years ago. What might have been, I never will know. 1319 Grandlin SW is kind of interesting: First a 1940s Kroger (lasting until the 1970s!), then a Thriftway, and now the home of the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op. The building hasn't been modified...

Chatham supermarkets in Michigan?

Is anyone familiar with Chatham, the defunct Detroit-area grocery chain? Wikipedia suggests that it had a rather...interesting demise: In 1986, Chatham was then owned by Nu-Trax, Inc., headed by Wendell Smith. In March 1986, the company was purchased by Alex Dandy, a businessman who owned Hamady Bro...

HistoryQuest DC website with detailed building info

The D.C. Historic Preservation Office debuted an interactive GIS map this week called HistoryQuest DC . I'm not usually a fan of heavily script-laden websites, but this one might be an exception. The website contains extremely detailed information on every building in the District...supermarkets inc...

Re: 3215 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke VA

Were you able to confirm if these stepped-front stores were acquisitions or "virgin" Krogers? Maybe their Roanoke division just built things differently in the 1940s, if the latter's the case.

Looking forward to the Roanoke data, BTW!

Re: New location list: Albuquerque, 1929-1959

8000 Central Ave SE might be the prize here. It's a well-preserved early-1950s Safeway with faint labelscar still visible on both sides of the pylon. And at least until recently, it still housed a food store. I've been to Albuquerque once in my life, but I didn't have time to sightsee while I was th...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

Finally, the crown jewel of Springfield: 712 W. Commercial Street. There was no doubt about the pedigree of this: 712_W_Commercial.jpg It's an almost pristine Safeway marina of the 1960s, still serving groceries under auspices of the local Price Cutter chain to this day. It features loopy wings, and...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

1773 S. Glenstone Avenue, another purported Safeway location: 1773_S_Glenstone.jpg This building was nondescript at first glance. Closer examination revealed a series of covered-over arches forming the walkway canopy, and period fieldstone accents by the front doors. The structure may have been subd...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

Hopes this helps you! Yes, it does! I just returned from Springfield yesterday, and I was able to check out several stores in the nick of time. 1106_E_St_Louis.jpg Here's one of the older Safeway locations, at 1106 E. St. Louis Street. This building is fairly nondescript. I'm surprised it doesn't h...

I don't remember there being supermarkets on the street squares of Atlantic City. Just tacky green houses and tacky red hotels.

Re: List of Missouri and Illinois Kroger stores from 1979

It's great to hear from a local expert! Feel free to add any information you want to share. To parse the individual stores in St. Louis: Des Peres was a Kroger Sav-On built on the SW corner of Manchester and I-270, across I-270 from West County Plaza. [...] The Manchester-I270 interchange has become...

Re: Stores in Springfield, Missouri?

Thanks for the info. Nowadays the leading grocery chain in Springfield appears to be Price Cutter, which inherited some stores from Dillons when Kroger exited the market. And that's not the only thing they inherited: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Price+Cutter,+712+W+Commercial+St,+Springfield,+M...

Atlanta "Murder Kroger" closes

Today is the last day of operation for the Kroger store in Atlanta on 725 Ponce De Leon Ave NE; popularly known in local lore as "Murder Kroger" thanks to a series of crimes that happened on and around the property over the years: http://atlanta.curbed.com/2016/10/28/13448628/murder-kroger...
