76 Balls

I have been in almost every 76 station in Bay Area a few years ago for a job but quit soon after I saw Farenhiet 911. Alot of the balls do not rotate anymore, but some still do. I would doubt they would take away all the balls. I have noticed since there merger with Circle K they have changed the co...

What ever happened to Shakeys Pizza?

I think they were mainly a West Coast chain. In the early days they had singers that came to the table, funny shaped balloons, mojo potatoes, a place where you could watch the pizzas be made and stained glass windows. Often, like Pizza Hut, they used a certain architectural prototype. Are there stil...

Not to mention for Safeway: Scotch Buy, Nu Made, Party Pride, Townhouse, Empress, Bel Air. Any others we are forgetting? I liked it better when they had the different brands. Now there is O, which eveeyone is getting confused with Oprah and O magazine.

Albertsons/Payless

For years and years there was a big Payless House of values on one side of the mall and an Albertsons at the other end. Ehe Albertsons closed in early seventies and became a JC Penny later while the Payless lasted and lasted and thrived for years. It was a big store and really was a House Of Values....

Anyone know the history or time lines of these stores? Rite Aid seems to be in alot of places but are Walgreens and Longs California based? Which ones took over old Payless Drugs and Pay N Save? Pay n Save

The Yardbirds that are in the Bay Area (which were just bought up by Home Depot) arent in any relationship to the Yardbirds in The Pacific Northwest. The Yardbirds in Bay Area seem to be in old grocery stores yet do not know which groceries they were, they have a few stores that they built. As far a...

wild Oats

The Wild Oats in San Anselmo was shuttered and has been vacant now for a few years, it was Picadilly Circus after Wild Oats went out of business but that was short lived. Alot of people say its because of a nearby Whole Foods that opened in the nineties.

UK Safeways

I saw Safeways awhile back in England. even went in to one. I cannot recall if brands were the same ( Nu-Made, Scotch Buy, Party pride, Cragmont days) but do recall the emblem as being slightly different. The one I went into to was a typical grocery store about the same size as stores built in the m...

Classic Safeway Closing

Since you are down in the area I would try to bargain for the circle signs. I'm sure they would work it out with you before auctioning or taking to the dump. Keep us posted if they hold an auction Id be interested in an original S, heck Id even like a few of the old grocery carts instead of it be me...

Where does Circle K come into the equation?

Anyone know about Circle K? I know nothing about them, except they seem to be a new operation I am suspecting. I see them almost every now that they merge there stores with 76 gas stations in the west. Is this the franchise that the Moonies owned in the seventies?

Canada Safeways

I was recently up near the town I grew up in visiting with family and we made the quick trip to the Canadian border less then an hour away. On our way home we got caught on old 99 out of Vancouver which isnt a major frewway and was surprised how many Safeways were along that strip. Is Safeway prevel...

7-11

7-11 has an interesting history. Sometimes you can find a cooperate issued book on ebay with pics and all. Started out as an ice delivery company, bought Spee Dee convient stores in Southern California in fifties and that's when 7-11 got really popular. Later in the sixties they =developed Icee's bu...

Monterey Safeway

I loved this Safeway, it was so classic. I hope it stays open. I am assuming Safeway has a few other locations in Monterey but think it is a shame to alter or get rid of this store.
