Re: Atlanta History Solicited

I believe the A&P warehouse pictures are on the A&P History Yahoo Group site.

TG&Y

There were TG&Y stores in many areas of Florida, usually in smaller towns. Their family centers (as opposed to the older, smaller variety stores) were often the first major discounter in the smaller towns. As for the Scott's 5&10's, they were indeed a chain. I don't have my information on th...

Searstown shopping centers

I'm trying to compile a list of Sears Town shopping center locations. Very few still operate under that name today though several remain. Titusville, FL still has a Searstown Mall. Fort Lauderdale's downtown area Sears is still known as Searstown by locals. Many have disappeared or no longer have th...

Kroger superstores

Those aisle signs visible in the photos were used in the first superstores. They actually date from the smaller Kroger stores of the mid-to-late 1960's. These were in the smaller store Kroger operated in Northeast Jackson, MS before opening the I-55 North superstore. They predate the superstore open...

1970s Kroger Superstore Interior Decor

The aforementioned brown and green floor tiles delineated specific areas of the store. The packaged bread section had the brownish brick insets as did much of the deli area. In the packaged bread section the overall tile was usually white. The deli area often had some harvest gold colored overall ti...

Morgan & Lindsey

I will have to do a little file searching, but I believe the chain was originally based in Texas. Some of their larger stores had lunch counters, but most were somewhat smaller neighborhood stores. They were fixtures in my original hometown of Jackson, MS for years after the G.C. Murphy acquisition.

K Mart Cafes

Most of the Kmart stores in Northwest Florida still maintain K Cafes. They stay pretty busy. Recently, they all received new menu boards and started offering Coffee Beanery coffee. They still have pizza, but it is a foodservice brand, not Little Caesar's. My local Kmart is still a good spot for a qu...

Colonial Plaza (Orlando, FL) Food Service

In addition to Jordan Marsh and Ronnie's, there was definitely food service at Woolworth's. It was part of the original strip that morphed into the eventual mall. As I stated earlier (and Buckhead also recalled), it had both a semi-enclosed Harvest House Restaurant and a quick-service counter openin...

Former A&P Futurestore/Pensacola, FL

The former Futurestore at 9th Avenue and Olive Road in Pensacola, FL, has recently been altered beyond recognition. All of the exterior touches that characterized the style are completely gone. The interior was totally gutted and subdivided. A shame as before it was pretty reminiscent of its superma...

Little or no remodeling was done to the Atlanta stores. Some odd remodeling (mostly partial flooring jobs and signage) was done in some of the tiny Alabama stores transferred over to the Atlanta Division. As stated in other board posts, there was one of the Futurestore operations in Pensacola, but i...

The stores used the "A&P" banner, sometimes with no additional wording, sometimes with the phrase Food Market added. Oftentimes, the words Food Market were run together (FoodMarket). I'll do more research in my old Atlanta area flyers later. The company tried several things to jump sta...

Bonus Gifts

I remember the program. Many magazines of the day had advertisements with the Bonus Gifts product participation noted. I know of at least a couple where there was a special promotional section featuring only ads from Bonus Gifts products. I will see if I can find some of these; perhaps one includes ...

Jordan Marsh CP Orlando restaurant location

IIRC, the dining room was on the third floor. Colonial Plaza had many old but interesting places. In addition to the aforementioned Ronnie's and Jordan Marsh dining room, there were a Harvest House coffee shop in Woolworth's as well as a snack bar opening onto the "mall" walkway. The entir...

Jordan Marsh Colonial Plaza Orlando

In fact, the Jordan Marsh at Colonial Plaza in Orlando did have a full-service restaurant with a liquor license. I ate there during the store's going out of business sale at the time the Maas Brothers/Jordan Marsh stores were being consolidated into Burdines at the time of the Allied/Federated merge...
