Re: Ukrops expansion to Roanoke, VA and Fredericksburg, VA
The Wikipedia page for Tanglewood Mall is a mess but it has this bit whether true or not: Kroger, an outparcel, finished renovating its interior and exterior; its new front was meant to "better highlight the company's selection of fresh foods."[15] The renovations were also in anticipation...

Re: Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
There was the partnership Sears did with Kmart in 2018, and Kroger also had stores inside a number of Sears back in the 1930s. Well, those are on two sides of the spectrum! Post-Lampert Sears didn't do much in terms of localized shops. They had an Edwin Watts Golf Shops and of course that mini-Kmar...

Re: The Kroger Co. Store List Project
Didn't see the Baker, Louisiana Kroger on there. Of course, the Baton Rouge stores were on the "Numberless Stores" (I believe there was a total of six in the region before they pulled out). This particular store would be at or around 14500 Plank Rd, Baker, LA 70714 and was later Rainbow Sh...

Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
One of the things that I found out in researching Sears Bakery Deli Cafe (page here ) is that they were operated mostly in Texas by a Houston-based company that ran restaurants. At least in their early days, they were operated by another Houston-based store that sold sandwiches and imported products...

Re: A&P bakery only locations?
They probably were the last major chain in include in-store bakeries, but before that they had a fairly extensive selection of house brand baked goods, more than most other chains. I dimly remember that those were among the things we went to A&P to buy. Many people fondly remember their Spanish...

Re: A&P bakery only locations?
I think its bakery production sites. A lot of supermarkets have bakeries, dairies, and other production plants. Safeway had them (pre-Albertsons), even into the late 1990s or early 2000s Safeway manufactured their own pet food, Kroger has them, H-E-B has them, Winn-Dixie used to have them.

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Well, I was mostly asking about Salt Lake City. I'm pretty sure that Nampa and/or Caldwell were later sold to Paul's, an independent supermarket that Albertsons bought out in the mid-2010s. I'll have to check and see where they were and which ones closed. When SuperValu sold the Salt Lake City-area...

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Safeway had already left Boise proper by this point. I know of two locations that continued as supermarkets: Overland and Vista continued as Albertsons for many years, until a new store was built adjacent to the site. Also, on Cole Road, Waremart operated a store for a number of years, although I a...

Farmer Jack in Utah
There's very little about what I can find about Borman's short-lived entry into Utah. From what I can tell, they bought the Salt Lake City division of Safeway in 1987 - https://apnews.com/article/21c75005125b9f52306b8f1dba0afbbd - and ended up selling them off in early 1988, shortly before the entir...

Montgomery Ward 1999 closures
In January 1999, Montgomery Ward closed 39 stores and several more Auto Express locations, but I can't find a list anywhere and my Google-fu is failing me. It's especially frustrating as I know I've seen a list before in the last few years and my hometown Montgomery Ward (Bryan) was on the 1999 clos...

Fazio's Discount Drug
For several years now, I was aware that there was a sort of discount department store that closed around 2001 called Fazio's in Dallas, not to be confused with Fazio's of Cleveland, the same Fazio's/Fisher Foods that owned Dominick's for a while, bought and rebranded the A&P stores in SoCal for ...
