Re: Long's Drugs being bought by CVS and will disappear by 2009
The Longs at Manchester Center and the store at Fig Garden Village in Fresno both have ice cream counters. Manchester's was added sometime in the early part of this decade in an effort to cater to the office workers in the mall (Manchester Center being a dead mall where the second story was converte...

$@!#*&. Longs was the last drugstore that hadn't been ruined by an East Coast chain. I'll miss them.

Re: Rapp's Chain-1959 Moscow World's Fair-St. Louis Area?
Somewhere I have a 1964 aircheck of KXOK radio that has a commercial for Bettendorf-Rapp Food Stores, so this was probably around the time the chains were combined.

Re: TG&Y
There was a TG&Y store in Winter Garden, FL. My aunt was opening a store around the time they went out of business and bought some of their old shelving. I still have a roll of "YDC" (York Distribution Company) price tags that came from that store. That strip center was in a decline wh...

Re: old store brands
I seem to recall the milk maiden being used on Jerseymaid cartons in the mid 80's. The only old Lucerne packaging I recall was the cartons with the big "L" and the flower on top of it.

Re: old store brands
Was Jerseymaid an independent dairy at some point? I found some reels of old commercials in an old AM radio station I was cleaning out, and there was a 1960's Jerseymaid ad among the tapes. It was a cute ad, it was done to sound like it was being sung by cows.

Some small pics of the interior decor of a prototype Futurestore in Allendale, NJ.
I hate to admit it, but it looks kind of stark and creepy.

Re: old store brands
I recall Vons having Vons branded items, along with a generic line called "Slim Price". Slim Price products were white with red lettering, similar to Ralphs' generic offerings that were white with black lettering. In the book "The Alpha Beta Story" there are photos from the early...

Re: Westlake, OH: Former A&P/Basement area
Since I made the original posting, a Tuesday Morning store has leased this space. I know the manager of the store, and had stopped by there yesterday to see how things were going for the grand opening. In the course of discussion, he mentioned there was a basement area in the building. Intrigued, I ...

Re: Car dealerships inside former mall anchor spaces
The Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, Ohio has a Kia and Subaru showroom in the old Victoria's Secret. I snapped a photo, it was kind of funny seeing a pink and gold car showroom with ornate lighting fixtures.

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV
I was just watching the CBS show "Swingtown" and saw a Lucerne milk on the table. While it was 70's design with the huge "L" with the flower above it, this show takes place near Chicago -- I don't think Safeway was in Chicago, were they?

I had a friend that worked at Thrifty Drug and they had to put those over the beer cooler sometime in the mid 90's. Customers didn't like them, they got really dirty fairly quick so after 4 or 5 months of them being there the manager just threw them away.

Re: Happy Steak
Happy Steak was down to one location by the mid 90's, (The location at Blackstone and Clinton in Fresno) and that finally closed around 2004. There was an article in the Fresno Bee about the chain's demise at the time of the last location's closure. On a side note, I have 2 steak platters from there...

The Winn Dixie didn't look like a Winn Dixie at all! I wonder why they didn't use that prototype more often, it still looked like a nice store even though it's now a thirft shop.
