Re: Former Alpha Beta, 520 Workman Mill Road, Bassett, CA

This Ralphs store opened as Alpha Beta in 1961 as part of North Whittier Heights Shopping Center (search La Puente in mall-hall-of-fame.blogspot.com for a photo-postcard). It is obvious from the exterior architecture. It is now called Pacific Place Shopping Center. North Whittier Heights is the pre-...

Re: Ralphs- Sepulveda and Vanowen, Van Nuys

That Covina store mentioned by Jeff above is also a former AB (425 S Citrus). The old blue-grey AB interior remains (which means it has not been remodeled yet) and its ABC license is registered to "Alpha Beta Company", a phantom subsidiary of Ralphs that operates all Ralphs/FFL stores that...

Re: RIP CompUSA 1984-2008

All SoCal Good Guys were converted to CompUSA or had their stores become superstores. This was the case to the now-closed Chino Spectrum store (Grand and CA71). It first opened as a Good Guys and after CompUSA acquired GG it became a CompUSA superstore with a GG department. There is now a "For ...

Re: Federated Group (Home Electronics)

There was a store somewhere in City of Industry or nearby. Sometime in the late 1970's, my parents bought an old rectangular AM radio (with the circular dial). It was a Federated brand product. I'm not sure whether it was in Industry or the one mentioned in the earlier post in La Puente near Food4Le...

Stater Express, California Speedway Fontana

During NASCAR's Stater Bros 300 at the California Speedway in Fontana, the RV parking area is anchored by a relatively new type of Stater Bros store, called Stater Express (named after their customer checkout payment system of the same name). I just got the 2008 program guide from my Walnut store ye...

Albertsons had department stores

In the 1950's, Albertsons had a small department store chain and a drugstore chain. What were the banner names and where were their stores located?

Re: Historical Ralphs subsidiaries

I was at Food4Less yesterday (West Covina) and I noticed one of their house brands, Ranchers Pride eggs. I looked closely at the label to find that it is distributed by FFLS Inc of La Habra CA. I decoded it as Food4Less Stores Inc , which is the Ralphs subsidiary that oversees all west coast Food4Le...

Ralphs Giant/Former Zody's Locations

(Split from the West Covina thread--Moderator)

Anybody have a list of the 14-16 Ralphs Giant superstore locations in SoCal? This would be helpful in my San Gabriel Valley research. I know one of them is now the Food4Less (previously Zodys) on 615 Azusa in West Covina.

Re: Stater Brothers - Whittier Bl, West Whittier

Staters took over my local store (Walnut store 168, Amar and Grand) in 1999 as part of the Albertsons divestiture and kept the Albertsons layout and decor (blue-grey scheme) until 2005 when started with a light remodel, then a full remodel in 2006, removing all traces of Albertsons that were still l...

historical Albertsons grocery divisions

After the merger with American Stores, Albertsons redid Netrefill.com, which was the former online prescription service started by American through its Savon and Osco stores (dba RxAmerica Inc). On the top of the page were the logos of all of the banners of the new Albertsons family. What happened t...

Alpha Beta's Travel Agency and Nursery divisions

Esther Cramer (Alpha Beta corporate historian) in her 1973 book The Alpha Beta Story wrote that in late 1973 the company was developing standalone Nursery Stores and Travel Agency offices to add to the Alpha Beta, FAD (Food4Less type no frills store), HyLo Drug, and Alphy's Restaurants chains. Anybo...

Re: other historical operations of Albertsons/American Stores

Does anybody have a list of Skaggs-Albertsons locations in California? Based on some of the information I read from the Times archives for my research, these locations were actually Skaggs Payless Drug Centers that were about 70,000 square feet in size that has a 20,000 sq ft Albertsons Food Store i...

Re: Smith's Food King in Socal--with store locations

Amar/Puente in La Puente is currently Big Saver Foods, previously Lucky (before the Albertsons merger). It's been a Lucky since 1984 after acquiring all the SFK sites. The store showed up in SFK ads as early as about 1967.

Re: West Covina area grocery history

rnaikens, North of the 10, the other original Smith Food King was at the Arrow Citrus Center (now Superior), at 1375 N Citrus in Covina. It was expanded as Lucky Savon in the '80's. Azusa/Rowland (375 N Azusa) has always been that nice large Stater Bros. That address does not show up in the Times ar...
