Re: Vons on Catalina Island: former Safeway?

Probably the tiniest store Vons runs today, it is the only supermarket in Catalina Island, and the architecture reminds me much more of 1940s Safeways than anything else. I remember this store well when it was a Safeway because of it's store number: Store #1 I'm sure it wasn't Safeway's first store...

Re: Texas: Safeway locations in ex-Weingarten's stores?

Just saw this on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weingarten%27s To concentrate on real estate development for retail shopping centers, Weingarten Incorporated sold its stores, which had grown to a chain of 104 stores in five states, to Grand Union in 1980. Grand Union then resold most of th...

This begs a good question: is Pavillions (which wasn't created by Safeway) the primary influence behind the "lifestyle" project of today, or previous initiatives like the original Marina store and International? I'm sure the Pavilions stores must have provided some inspiration but the fac...

The SoCal natives would remember better, but that was na era where Vons seemed to be rolling out "niche" prototypes, including their stores with under the Tiaungis (?sp) which targeted Hispanic customers. In the late 80's Vons was already number one in market share (even before buying Saf...

1835 S. La Cienega, Los Angeles was a Hughes Market when I moved to L.A. in the early 1980s. I don't know if it was an A&P before that.

Accross the street there was an Albertson's (in the shopping center) which I believe was a new build for them in the space where Circuit City is now.

Most of these locations were viable as grocery stores and a few that are closed had even been remodeled by Lucky. It's amazing how Albertson's screwed up so badly in California. I also remember that store in Northridge. Very cool retro architecture and the store was a huge success for Dales and is l...

Re: 1974 Lucky prototype

From the May 1974 edition of Chain Store Age (page 48) - anyone have any idea where this location is, or was? http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/csa/1974lucky2.jpg larger: http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/csa/1974lucky.jpg Many Lucky stores looked exactly like that in the day. Could be anyplace.

I was in this store the week it closed. It was called Boys Continental (note the article refers to it as Piggly Wiggly Continental). It looked almost exactly like the Piggly Wiggly when it closed which was in the early 80's. It was a cool but outdated gourmet-oriented store.

I remember the Hollywood store. It was actually about two blocks east of Western on Hollywood. It was a dump (dirty and old - not cool architecture, either). The Los Feliz store is one block south of Los Feliz Blvd. and about four north of Franklin on Hillhurst. Smiths had remodeled it just before s...

I always thought the South Pasadena store was in the location where Bristol Farms is now. The Bristol Farms sign looks like a mdified version of one of the old Market Basket signs.

I'm sure the one in Santa Monica isn't original. Was there any outside LA, or all in LA? Grocery stores were already getting into the 20,000 sq ft. range in 1950. The Vons in Santa Monica is very old. I would have guessed late 50's or early 60's by looking at it so it's not totally out of the quest...

Hmm, I wonder if the Target on Sports Arena is it. I dont remember but I think it was split into two stores. Yes it is. The FedMart was originally 225,000 square feet. Target took part of it and I forgot who took the rest. I know they built a Ralphs next door to keep a grocery store in the center (...

Re: Superior-Covina

Covina used to be a Smith's market, later Lucky's that closed when they were bought by Albertsons. Are you sure about that? The only Smith's I remember in Covina was the one on Azusa Ave. that became an Albertson's. I think the Superior store in Covina opened as one of those large Lucky/Sav-On comb...

The North Hollywood store is a former Safeway, which I would think replaced the store on Victory that was mentioned on another thread. Later it was pretty much the only Vons in that part of the Valley. RE: The North Hollywood store... The Drug Emporium in that shopping center was a Safeway. There w...
