Re: Godfathers Pizza

There used to be a 2 story Godfather's in El Toro, in the Saddleback Valley Plaza off El Toro Road. That entire center was recently bulldozed to bare earth, so all traces of its existence are gone now.

Pretty good pizza, by the way. But not as good as Roundtable.

Re: Vons Locations, 1967

The one on Doheny Park Rd in Capistrano Beach (now a Stats) bears not label scars, but automatic door opening pressure pad scars on the concrete in front of the entrances. In fact, one of those scars marks the now closed off entry to what had been the liquor department on the far west side of the bu...

The dawn of price scanners

http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2008/06/dayintech_0626 And it just seems like yesterday that the checkers would stand before the punch button mechanical cash registers that spit out the narrow, light tan colored paper tape with the blue printing on it, then figure out in their head how...

Re: Liquor Barn locations in LA & OC, 1985

The Liquor Barn on Muirlands in Mission Viejo was housed in what had been a Safeway. That center, built in the late sixties, was demolished in the mid to late nineties, so the Albertson's is new construction. For historical purposes, that had been the second Safeway to serve MV. The first was a smal...

Neither do I, and I've been here since 1955.

Remember those vinyl strips?

That were once popular? They'd put them on the front of the frozen food freezers instead of doors. I first saw them at a brand new Fazio's in Mission Viejo, CA back in the mid-seventies. Somewhere along the line they disappeared. They were supposed to be The Next Great Thing in shopping convenience....

Any idea why they closed the 3rd and Maple store? That was my main grocery stop when I lived there in the late nineties.

Re: Does anybody remember All American Mkts. in So. Calif?

Yes I do. The old Albertsons that was on N. El Camino Real in San Clemente started life as an All American. I believe it was the first supermarket built in that area. The building has since been razed for new development. No loss, as it was an ugly, yellow painted concrete block barn of a structure.

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

The one in South San Clemente was built in 1965, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about their architecture to know if it's original.

Here's the address to enter into Google street view if you want to see it:
2398 S El Camino Real, San Clemente.

Old photo

I found this when I was 1,220 photos into a 9,746 image collection from the Online Archive of California. The caption is what piqued my interest: "If my memory is OK, Sontag and Sam Selig Grocers on North Broadway, Los Angeles, then Downey Ave., consolidated and was [sic] the beginning of the S...

Stouffer's Noodles Romanoff and Welsh Rarebit. Those cookies from Mother's that were rectangular in shape, dark brown in color, and had raisins in them and a molasses/brown sugar taste. I believe they had white icing on them. Can't remember the name. Dr. Ross Dog Food. The ad jingle: Dr. Ross Dog Fo...

Re: W T Grant

In 1971, San Clemente got a huge, brand new WTG complete with a Bradford House restaurant. It was located at 550 Camino de Estrella, and is now occupied by a Kmart. The restaurant is now a Little Caeser's Pizza Station.

Grant's wasn't there more than 4 or 5 years before it was shuttered.
