Re: Great American
Is the Lake George one Price Chopper now? Or Grand Union/GU "Family" Markets? Per the gufamilymarkets.com website, there is no current GU in Lake George, so I guess that means Price Chopper. From a piece of an ad flier that I saved (unfortunately only the part with the locations, but not ...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P
Do you doubt it was an A&P? No - just that I guess we didn't go to that area as much as others, so I just don't remember it. I only vaguely remember the Great American being there, and since that was likely a later use the A&P was probably gone before I had a chance to see it. Perhaps it cl...

Re: Oldest Operating A&P
Here are perhaps the oldest buildings left in the A&P chain, including Pathmark and more recent closures: 12. A&P, Catskill, NY (just closed? I saw a half-empty building with Advance Auto Parts in the other half. The streetlights in the parking lot gave it away as a former A&P. Across t...

Re: Edwards/Finast/Super Finast
No I don't believe it was. I seem to recall an Edwards Food Warehouse in Latham very near Albany which opened I'm going to say mid-80's or so. It's long gone but I can't remember when it closed. (BillyGr: if you see this, please fill in some of the details here.) The building has long been demolish...

Re: Grand Union
I apologize for my last reply. I meant to say that GU markets currently has a store in Massachusetts. I must have skipped over the 6th post of this topic, as Grand Union did not have stores in MA. I also learned today they had no RI stores. My mistake.... BDK I really can't say that they never had ...

Re: A&P to close 25 stores.
A&P is selling 7 more stores to Big Y, including the last non-NYC metro Waldbaums in West Hartford. The other 6 being sold are: Old Lyme, Branford, Mystic, East Haven, Middletown and Naugatuck. This leaves them with 5 A&P's (Danbury x 2, Greenwich, Riverside, Stamford) and 1 Food Emporium (...

A few others from various updates on the Ames board: A&P - Lodi, NJ A&P - East Brunswick, NJ A&P - Woodbridge, NJ A&P - Yorktown Heights, NY Pathmark - Millville, NJ That brings it up to 20 of the 25. Since the original story also said in 5 states (so far only listed are NY, NJ, CT a...

Re: Safeway in Central PA?
Lots of out-of-the-way supermarket branded stuff also shows up at the local grocery outlet stores. And at Ocean State Job Lots - last summer I think every different type of eating supplies (cups, plates, silverware, napkins) came from a different grocery store, including some in quite far away part...

Re: Acme in UP State N.Y.
There was an article in the Albany Times-Union a couple weeks ago on the 50th anniversary of Stuyvesant Plaza (located on Western Avenue, just off what is now the intersection of the NYS Thruway Exit 24 and the southern end of the Northway, along with a part of I-90 that connects the Thruway to the ...

Re: Grocers in "real" malls - not strip malls
In the NE, pathmark still operates quite a number of locations inside *old* malls. These stores are fairly old, some of them 30, 40 years old. However, most have been expanded. This reminded me of something - there is one Pathmark on Route 35 in Woodbridge Township - Colonia area (for those who mig...

Seriously - I believe that TYFSAK is the acronym for Thank You For Shopping At Kmart, so I'm guessing that Kmart had this type of register at one time?

If so, the bargain store was either Cost-Rite or Price-Rite.

Re: Redner's Warehouse Market in Middletown, NY is Closing
Hi, Weis had a store in Newburgh of of route 84 near the Mall for a lot of years. It was a low volume store and I can!t imagine that they would come back into this market. They also had one in Kingston at the same time. And, of course back a number of years owned the Albany Public Markets chain in ...

Re: Great American Stores Upstate NY
As to the demise of Victory Markets, Inc, of Norwich, NY... In about 1989 or 1990, Victory Markets purchased 7-8 stores in the Albany area from another chain. They weren't well marketed and not well received. Those would have been the stores that they bought from the Big V group, which at the time ...
