Re: Looking for info on Market Basket stores in the Seattle area
The Overlake Fred Meyer originally started its' life as a White Front as did the Burien Fred Meyer. Both stores were "twins", although the Burien store had the trademark curved roof and Overlake didn't. White Front was bought by Valu Mart about 1972 .... roughly. Valu Mart then converted f...

Re: Looking for info on Market Basket stores in the Seattle area
The Overlake aka Bellevue Fred Meyer originally was acquired about 1975 along with other stores that had been part of Leslies aka Valu-Mart. In the early to mid 1970's Fred Meyer started labeling Marketime as Fred Meyer-Marketime. So for a few years, Fred Meyer was getting people used to its' name b...

Seattle Area Fred Meyer Stores
I used to work for Fred Meyer at the old White Center store that was formerly a Marketime Drug. I have been told conflicting things about Fred Meyer's grocery operations in Seattle. I had been told a few years ago on this site that Market Basket didn't exist in Seattle. But when I worked for Fred Me...

Re: 2 Supermarkets In One Shopping Center
The only shopping center in the Seattle area to have 2 supermarkets, to my knowledge, is Lakewood Town Center. This center, in Lakewood, WA outside of Tacoma had a Thriftway and a Safeway. The Thriftway later became Thriftco, then Villa Fine Food, then Larry's Market. Now it is Saar's Marketplace. T...

Ralphs Marketplace, Fresh Fare, and other formats
After Ralphs was acquired by Fred Meyer, I remember looking on Ralphs' pre-Kroger website and had seen some mentions of "Ralphs Marketplace" stores. Since Kroger took over, I have not seen any mention of them. From what I remember, I thought it sounded very similar to the current Kroger an...

Bonanza Drug Centers, Bonanza 88 and G.O. Guy Drugs
When I was a child, I remember visiting my grandmother who lived next to a strip mall at Ambaum Blvd SW and SW 128th St in Burien, WA. The two main anchors were a Mayfair Market (which later became Lucky and other markets), and a G.O. Guy Drugstore. Can anyone tell me anything about this small Seatt...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
It has been awhile since I had read this thread. In doing so, I realized that I need to acknowledge Timbabcock's post about the first supermarket in Washington State to have scanners. It had mentioned Boulveard Park Thriftway. He is most likely correct. This store was originally known , as Mansfield...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
I thought that you would all find this interesting. I happened upon a website that has a pretty extensive history of Fred Meyer. I know that in the past I had mentioned about Fred Meyer acquiring a grocer in Washington State called Market Basket. I had been told that they had not done that or that t...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
In King County, when Fred Meyer bought out Leslies, there were no Fred Meyer operated food departments. The neighboring Tacoma stores had them as they were new builds for Fred Meyer. A few years earlier, the former Broadway Fred Meyer location in Seattle had a grocery department for a short time tha...

Re: The Infamous Eve's
Fred Meyer, decades pre-Kroger, operated Eve's Buffets. Most were part of Fred Meyer stores, but there were definitely a few freestanding locations. I believe Eve was Fred's mother. I remember that. The Burien store had one in it. I think they even used the Eve's name (with the same logo) on some o...

Harmon's, Your Neighborhood Grocer
I was looking at information about Downtown Salt Lake City's new City Creek Center. This is a replacing the old Crossroads and ZCMI Center Malls. As part of this project, along with Nordstrom and Macy's, is Harmon's Grocery Stores. Looking at Harmon's website, harmonsgrocery.com , I saw their histor...

Re: Does Anyone Know Where This Freddy's is Located?
This store looks like the "Benson Plaza" Fred Meyer, which is actually in North Benson Center in Renton, WA. I am not absolutely sure, that it is. But if it is the same store, it was the first Fred Meyer in Renton.

Too bad we can't see the Alberstons in The Dalles. But here is the one in White Center, near Seattle. I thought it looked similar. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2236/2056957010_c1ea8d761e.jpg?v=0http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2151/2056957012_8181bf4c8b.jpg?v=0 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2151/20...

While I don't have documentation, I believe that the first supermarket in the Seattle area to have scanners was Uddenberg's Thriftway near Burien. I remember reading about it in the Seattle Times. The first chain in the area to adopt them for all their stores I believe was QFC. I remember reading ab...
