Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants
I came across an open and flourishing Kmart Cafe today in Milton, FL. There was traffic even around 2:00 P.M., and there were a number of signs touting specials in addition to the menu board items. This was great as these cafes are rapidly disappearing.

Re: New Orleans area supermarkets
Winn Dixie is the only large chain operator really left in the metro. Rouses has a considerable presence as A&P was the only other dominant chain left when they took over. New Orleans has a number of strong independents, most notably Dorignac's. A&P had swallowed up the remains of the old Sc...

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants
Anyone know if Kmart has phased out all Kmart Cafes yet? Another in my area (Panama City Beach, FL) has closed. They have been going one by one, but some I have visited in the last year seem quite viable. This one was replaced with the usual schlocky display of seasonal stuff. It was virtually intac...

Re: W T Grant
The Grant City stores did close after W.T. Grant's huge liquidation sales. The leases were acquired by Kmart during and following the bankruptcy proceeding. This was the largest retail bankruptcy in history at the time, and it took a while. Kmart did light remodeling and some rearranging in the Gran...

Re: The ever shrinking Winn-Dixie
Edric's observations about the South Florida/East Coast stores certainly bears out my thoughts. From my most recent trip in that area (March-April 2009), many of the stores were in areas where most retail has either relocated or substantially remodeled. Publix has been especially aggressive in erasi...

Re: The ever shrinking Winn-Dixie
While the large number of Florida closures at first looks pretty alarming, it is really a very small number since the vast majority of their stores are in the state. I can't speak to every location, but a number are in metro areas where there are other Winn Dixie stores. In the 1980's and 1990's, it...

Jackson Mall in Jackson, MS, had a Woolco as third anchor. It was there from the time the mall opened until the chain folded in 1982.

Re: When did these A&Ps close? Were any of them replaced?
I was mostly referring to the early decade turbulence coming off the 1970's James Woods was brought on board to correct. From the Super Fresh and Futurestore initiatives forward were good times for A&P. I remember the articles touting their comeback in Time and Fortune. These moves were what I w...

Re: When did these A&Ps close? Were any of them replaced?
Correct on the 1974 date. A wave of A&P closings in all divisions took place during the 1970-1975 period. Some stores were replaced with newer ones, some newer ones were closed leaving older ones, and some markets were demoted from several stores to one. This was the aftermath of price competiti...

Re: When did these A&Ps close? Were any of them replaced?
This is probably not a 1954 design. There has been some prior discussion on another thread about the retrofit of existing buildings to the centennial design. These are prime examples of the better quality retrofit. Many were just done with lapboard siding. Most of these likely dated from the mid-194...

Re: Pantry Pride in Florida?
Echoing Steve Landry, there were a fair number of Fields/Pantry Pride combos. One was in the city of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and is open as Kmart to this day. The adjacent Pantry Pride hosted several supermarkets post-Pantry Pride but is currently used for storage by Kmart. Pompano Beach and Winter P...

Re: What did these Food Fairs look like? Help please!
Actually, the third view, the Devon, PA, store was the most frequently seen J.M. Fields build. That or variations were built with a Food Fair or later Pantry Pride to the left or right. The supermarket had a much lower roof line and usually had the same facing of either brick or stone as featured on...

Re: Centennial A&Ps "reconstituted" as Super Fresh
Most of the pictured stores may have been expanded during the Super Fresh start-up era. However, it was not unusual for centennials to have one or more small stores attached to either side, sort of a mini shopping center if you will. In the day when they were built, supermarket pharmacies were almos...

Re: Centennial A&Ps "reconstituted" as Super Fresh
A large number of the earliest Super Fresh stores were converted centennials or other older formats. Most of the Futurestore and other highly contemporary designs were introduced to the various A&P divisions after the Super Fresh debut. As to why they would keep such an old store design, the ver...
