Re: Grand Union

I thought I'd share this link I found of Grand Union locations in the northeast from 7-17-1952. Great advertisement I think!! I hope the link works. https://fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2024/Plattsburg%20NY%20Republican/Plattsburgh%20NY%20Press%20Republican%201952/Plattsburgh%20NY%20Press%20Republic...

Re: A&P in New Hampshire

Just spotted this reply when it was quoted in another post. Red Hook was open for a bit after this ad, but probably closed in the earlier 1990's and was a CVS for a long time (haven't been by in a couple years, but I think they may have moved out). This town only had an IGA besides the A&P for ...

Re: A&P in New Hampshire

Vermont had three: Bennington, which underwent an expansion in 1985, Middlebury, and Essex Junction. Upstate NY had 10: Tannersville, Red Hook, Wynantskill, Norwich, Margaretville, Ithaca, Watertown, Tupper Lake, Saranac lake, and Plattsburg. Some of these locations have already been mentioned in t...

Re: A&P stores in Maine in 1990s

Glad you spotted that post. Looks like it could be either of those, all depending on what routing was taken fro Bangor (as one could access Eastport via the route that goes through the Calais area, or could go more towards Bar Harbor and pick up US 1 there to go north towards Eastport, which goes ri...

Re: A&P stores in Maine in 1990s

Look for the site of Calais alumni . org - Calais is a small town in Maine that fits the original poster's description (it is actually a small point of ME surrounded by New Brunswick on 3 sides), and would be a logical routing from Bangor into Canada as the poster suggested. The site has some photos...

Re: Walgreen Agency?

While looking through an online newspaper archive, I came across an ad in the local paper from 1970 for a local drug store with two locations that were referred to as "Walgreen Agency" stores. I'd never heard of this previously. Was this some kind of an alliance like Rexall was back in th...

Re: Walgreen Agency?

Started in 1929, and the Walgreens company would offer stores in smaller areas that they wouldn't put their own store in deals on many Walgreens branded items. Helped them sell more of their items (which would help them get a better price for a higher volume) and also helped the smaller town stores ...

Re: NEW: Bridgeport CT, 1925-1985

Shop-Rite dates back to at least 1960 in Connecticut & Massachusetts, through Mott's which had the largest market share in Greater Hartford during the 60s and 70s. The only ShopRite stuff I've seen in MA is a couple of their Price Rite locations (Pittsfield and West Springfield) - Pittsfield wa...

Looks more like it usually does, though the other style looked somewhat familiar as well - not sure if it was that way in the past, or some other forum that used the same setup that had that style or what.

Re: Lawson's convenience stores

I worked at Lawsons/Dairy Mart for a total of 21yrs (17 as manager. And 4 in office as corporate store analyst) until we filed bankruptcy and were sold. Trying times. The only job I could say I loved. Woke up early to get there. It was a huge disappointment when we were bought and office workers co...

Re: "Grandma" at 125

The upstate NY stores in the New England Division probably got combined with the Waldbaum/Food Mart stores they bought. Food Mart was based in Springfield and if they kept their facilities or the old A&P-Springfield operation, it would have been a logical place to source some upstate NY stores....

Re: "Grandma" at 125

It does seem that Superfresh came about in PA due to issues as described. However, looking at a map, Florence (NJ) is not far from Camden, which is right across the river from Philly, so it might have just been where a facility was already located (close to the city but far enough out to be cheaper/...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

I remember those DTS registers at Price Chopper as well but I recall the digital readout being on the side of the machine facing the customer as you stood in the checkout lane. I believe the readout was in orange. Don't ever remember that pole set-up you're speaking of. Maybe it was just the config...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

The older registers were marked "Data Terminal Systems" but the newer ones, or the ones with replacement parts around the display were marked "National Semiconductor Datachecker/DTS". In High School I worked at Mayfair Markets in San Diego and they had just converted to electron...
