Another company that specializes in store brands is Ralcorp, which was the human food part of Ralston Purina that was spun off. In the past the store brand has been considered a lower quality than the national brand, and that's certainly still the case with some products (generic ketchup? eww!) But ...

One of the last, if not the last, Alpha Betas was built on Lincoln Blvd at the end of the Marina Freeway stub in Marina del Rey. It was a clean, modern store with all the amenities, which was a nice change of pace from the typical small Alpha Beta. The Miracle Mile and 3rd Street/La Brea stores also...

I had a conversation with an acquaintance about a month ago who works for Sears corporate and she said that they are going to start bringing back the candy counter in some stores. It has something to do with the smell of popcorn wafting through the stores....

When Alpha Beta introduced the new green and yellow logo they put "fresh food" (in all lower case) on their signs. Fresh food, as opposed to what?

Smart & Final uses "That's Smart! (And Final!)" Duh.

Back on the old message board, I posted about a Sav-On on Lake Ave in Pasadena that is a 2-level store with Sav-On on the first level and an empty upstairs. In looking at the LottaLiving.com message boards, this building originally had a grocery store on the bottom level and a Zody's on the top level.

I grew up down the street from this store. In 1982, Market Basket (Kroger) pulled out of Socal and it became a Vons. It was a Vons until it closed a few weeks ago. See the end of this thread for more: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=124&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&am...

... but I don't think they designated that store as store #1, that honor went to a store in the Valley, I can visualize it but I can't remember the city or the street it was on...was it Ventura Blvd? The store at Coldwater Canyon and Ventura in Studio City was designated as Hughes Store #1. It's no...

The Hughes family in Southern California was heavily involved in their namesake chain until they sold the company. (I'm not sure exactly when they sold or to whom, was it the QFC sale?) After Fred Meyer bought Ralphs and Hughes parent QFC, the Hughes family and former Hughes executives bought some o...

I would have thought that a new chain entering an area would remodel the store so it didn't look like the store that it just was. And it wasn't like there were hundreds of stores (a la Albertsons-Lucky) that needed to be done. No wonder they weren't very successful. (I know this wasn't the only fact...

76 gas station balls are going away

I saw this, of all places, on the BBC News page: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4735280.stm ConocoPhillips is removing the iconic 76 balls from their gas stations, replacing them with boring flat signs. More info and a peition are at http://www.savethe76ball.com/ . There's also a forum where yo...

The very large Vons store in Alhambra closed this past Sunday. The lease was up. Apparently Ralphs owns the building and was leasing it to Vons. What is going to happen to the building is uncertain. The Crawfords Corner store at Valley and New? That was my store as a kid... I'm going to be in the n...
