Re: Mystery store: 3000 N Sterling Ave, Peoria IL

Is it possible that brick is not original to the exterior? This is more of a side shot but what little I could see of the front says this could be a 1950's pre-centennial A+P but they used a lot of stone for the exteriors on those so I'm wondering if that brick was added later in a renovation of som...

Re: Weis in Northern VA

I helped build the shopping center in Chantilly where that Weis was located, it opened around 1993 but was gone by 1999 - I strongly suspect the Shoppers Food Warehouse built closer to Route 50 had something to do with that. I think I'm familiar with that shopping center from taking several trips t...

A+P Kwik Save

Anybody have any info. on this? Found ads for it when I was going through an online newspaper archive and searching for info. on a discount drug store. From what I could piece together, it opened sometime in late 1971 in Cortland, NY. I'm presuming it was a conversion of an existing store. My questi...

Re: 2 Pathmark stores right next to each other?

I vaguely remember seeing signage (though I think the store was closed by that point) many years ago outside the Pittsfield (MA) area (more like Lenox) of what looked like a Pathmark store, so those drugstore only ones may have spread a bit further than the actual supermarkets ever did. Speaking of...

Re: DC area Grand Union stores that became Basics

Basics was the name of GU's house brand generics in the very early '80's. White labels with red or black lettering as I recall. They even had Basics beer which was actually one part beer and a million and one parts water. In other words, not the best quality and neither was the rest of the product l...

Re: Banner Market, Detroit - 1931 to 1973

Banner Market was closely associated with other independents in the area. They shared advertising, marketing and often bought from a common wholesaler. Could the Banner name have been used elsewhere? I remember in the 1970's in NE Pa. advertising for a group of what I'm presuming to be independents...

Re: Company Publications

A+P did one especially for their centennial year in 1959 called "The A+P Circle" although there were probably more over the years. This one was quarterly and I've got two of them and would love to get the others. It was written from an historical perspective considering it was playing off ...

Re: SuperFresh/A&P in Washington, DC

It amazes me that here we are 60+ years after the fact when this design made its debut that, even though A+P vacated them all in some cases decades ago, how many of those facades still exist today. For example, in my immediate area, two of them are still around and one still even has the coupola wit...

Re: Shameless self-promotion

Finally got a chance to listen to a bit of this yesterday and I say this in all sincerity-you really need to write a book on this subject. I'm not joking or trying to be overly flattering-this is such an interesting topic. Maybe it wouldn't be a best seller or anything like that, but I think it woul...

Re: Walgreen Agency?

Thanks for the responses everybody. I honestly had never heard of the concept until I happened to see that old ad from the local paper. I did a little more digging and found that these two locations were Walgreen Agency stores from at least 1965. In 1971 the family that ran them sold them to a compa...

Walgreen Agency?

While looking through an online newspaper archive, I came across an ad in the local paper from 1970 for a local drug store with two locations that were referred to as "Walgreen Agency" stores. I'd never heard of this previously. Was this some kind of an alliance like Rexall was back in the...

How many of those were actual outright closures vs. relocations or replacements?
