Re: Long's Drugs being bought by CVS and will disappear by 2009

The longtime Longs Drugs in Eastland (West Covina) has officially changed its name to CVS Pharmacy. This store started out in the Mervyns space when the mall opened in 1957. In 1959 when the Avenue Shops behind the mall were completed, Longs moved into their current space as a co-anchor to Hiram's S...

Re: Rancho Cucamonga chain grocer history

Correcting the spelling on the name of the center - Sunrize. Mel may have called it that because the center is perched on an area of changing elevation and looking south towards Ontario Airport early in the morning, one might be able to catch a good sunrise. I don't know why he used a Z instead of a...

Re: Marie Callender's

Marie's had a small location inside the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley CA. It is considered as an express cafe type location. I don't know how long Marie's has been at the Reagan Library. I believe it was a branch of their main restaurant on 20 Cochran Street near the 118 Freeway....

Goodbye Virgin Megastores

This week, Virgin announced the closure of the Megastore chain. They blame it on 1) changing technology <people prefer downloading music from the internet> and 2) the current status of the nation's economy. This means Ontario Mills Mall (Ontario, CA) will lose one of its large anchor stores. This VM...

Re: Long's Drugs being bought by CVS and will disappear by 2009

CVS recently closed the Longs Drugs in Rancho Cucamonga (Haven and Baseline in Terra Vista) recently and put the building up for lease. As I mentioned in my RC history post, CVS operates two other stores in the city - on Haven/Church (also in Terra Vista, former Savon) and Milliken/210 Freeway (adja...

Re: LOMA LINDA, CA--Alpha Beta & Stater Brothers

In Colton-Grand Terrace-Loma Linda area alone, Staters has: 3-7 supermarkets (I don't know how many exactly, but on Barton Road, there's at least 1 Staters in each city). multi-building corporate headqurters (including warehouses, office building, mechanic shops), also on Barton Road New headquarter...

Re: Market Basket still exists in Texas and Louisiana

Here's my historical analysis: This MB (TX/LA) chain was likely a Kroger spinoff and became independent some time after Kroger exited the Los Angeles area (most Market Basket stores were sold to Ralphs, which is ironically part of Kroger today and others became Lucky/Albertsons or Big Lots). I'm sur...

Re: Lucky Stores non-food chains before American Stores merger

Hancock Fabrics recently filed for Chapter 11 but hoped to stay alive.

As part of the Hancock acquisition, Lucky obtained not only Hancock's retail business but also some manufacturing facilities as well.

Re: History of: Kmart, City of Industry CA

Kmart always sold small kitchen appliances like toasters, mixers, etc. Larger appliances such as washers/dryers, refrigerators, ovens came about with the Sears acquisition of Kmart. As you may all know, Kenmore is the house brand. Many K's remodeled a section of their store and call the appliance ar...

Re: West Covina CA

I heard a commercial on 980 KFWB this morning - Chick's is closing at the end of the month and will reopen in May as Dick's Sporting Goods. They are currently having a massive liquidation sale. I never heard of Dick's until they started sponsoring some of the college sporting events aired on the ESP...

Re: West Covina CA

Jan, The church you mentioned on San Bernardino Road was a McDaniel's from the 1940's. They also had a Garvey Ave location, which was likely between Azusa and Hollenbeck. West of Azusa, San Bernardino Road has many old buildings/businesses (such as Covina Bowl behind the brand new Home Depot). Sunse...

Re: What ever happened to Shakeys Pizza?

Dean, The Colima Road Shakey's became a Szechwan chinese restaurant (which I've been to once) that didn't last long. Later it became a Chinese cafe but that didn't last long either. The place (still owned by Chinese) is currently an after-school tutoring center. Shakeys is based in Alhambra and own ...

Re: PayLess Drug Stores

Dean, As for Payless Diamond Bar, LATimes archives has Payless drug ads in the mid 1970's that listed Diamond Bar as a store location. I know it was 1970 because of a plaque on the sidewalk right by the front entrance. When it first became Savon, it may have been one of those Savon Home Centers with...

Re: Rancho Cucamonga chain grocer history

I think the intent for the owner was not limited to freeway traffic (the center is of higher elevation than the freeway). The increasing enrollment of students at Chaffey College could also be another factor for Haven Village to expand.
