A&P was my first too. I have many memories of my mother taking me to a '60s or '70s-era A&P down the street from my house in Georgia. It wasn't a centennial, but rather part of a larger shopping center. The early early memories I have are of dark wood paneling. I remember some excitement whe...

As of a few years ago, Greenville, SC had a shopping center with a Bi-Lo and a Fresh Market about 2 doors down. Granted, in this case, the two stores really serve different niches. In Columbus, GA, there was a shopping center with both an A&P and Winn Dixie. The Winn-Dixie location eventually be...

Third item down:

Some small pics of the interior decor of a prototype Futurestore in Allendale, NJ.

I hate to admit it, but it looks kind of stark and creepy.

The Charleston, SC location has actually been remodeled and expanded. Fortunately, it still looks like an old Centennial store, just with gray stucco instead of brick. It even has a small bit of '80s A&P decor in it. (in red letters, it says 'The Butcher Shop' above the meat department). Doscher...

The vanishing Georgia site is great. Thanks. I've mentioned this before, but I think at least part of the reason W/D didn't exit Columbus is because it, Publix, and to a much lesser extent, Piggly Wiggly are the *only* viable grocers left in town. No Bi-Lo, Kroger, Ingles, or Food Lion. Publix &...

If nothing else, Family Mart was consistent. That looks identical to the former location in Columbus.

Thanks for the photos. Can't wait to see more of the A&Ps

Surfing the net gave me this website: http://www.johnmcleanarchitect.com/Projects.htm It shows some Futurestore prototype images. In the Southeast, I'm pretty sure that they had Futurestores in Panama City, FL, some in the Louisiana area, as well as Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. I wish I'd visited ...

Speaking of K-Mart pairings, I have been told that a Kmart here in Charleston, SC had an Office Depot attached to it. I also remember reading/hearing that Office Depot fell under the Kmart corporate umbrella at one time. Can anyone confirm that? I'm going to double-check on this Kmart/Office Depot p...

Mystery!

I just checked the A&P Real Estate section this weekend...and discovered something that intrigued me. In Columbus, Georgia, they have some property available at 5601 Forest Ave. Naturally, I just assumed that this was referring to this store on Floyd Rd (the only colonial-style building in Colum...

If I were anywhere near your ballpark, I'd be there in a heartbeat. I love collecting old grocery store artifacts. Granted - the only artifacts I ever got were a couple of old interior A&P signs out of a store that closed in Columbus, GA. And that was simply a matter of finding a tall ladder and...

The Maingate Plaza discount store sign looks just like one we had here in Maryland. It was a SEARS catalog store. Ours was about that size too. They sold appliances, sewing machines, vacuums and hardware, carpets. etc. That would be my guess. that's a great guess! The amount of letters would make i...

The 'Meats' sign in the former Thomaston Pig brings me back to the interior of Food Giant. Big Ominous Stencilly Letters. I remember Gaylord's. Zayre bought 'em. Then Ames bought Zayre. Ames closed most of the Zayre locations in the South, including the Columbus ones. (The Columbus locations never became Ames stores.) Finally, Ames bit it. I don't remember an exact timeline, but I am positive that the Columbus Gaylord'...

In Fort Valley, there is a small Harvey's grocery store (owned by the Delhaize group) in what appears to be an old Piggly Wiggly location.

Up the street about a mile is the former Foodmax location which has been vacant for a few years.

Harveys is moving into the larger Foodmax location.
