I'm going to try to find a copy of the April, 1957 issue of Arizona Highways . I'm curious to know in what context they were printed. Maybe they did other articles showing this kind of stuff as well. Arizona Highways is one of those magazines like National Geographic . There are a ton of 'em around,...

Re: History of the "super market"
...An early super was the "Big Bear" in New Jersey... The little Avatar thingy next to my name is from a matchbook cover for "Big Bear, America's Greatest Thrift Centers, Where Millions Shop and Save - Stores In Principal Cities". They defined "Principal Cities" as Dar...

Albers in Richmond, VA
In 1924, there was a Jonathan Albers in Richmond who was a supervisor for Plant-Lipford Co., the operator of the local Piggly-Wiggly stores. By 1926, Albers was operating 20 locations on his own under the name of Blue Ribbon Grocery. By 1931 the Blue Ribbon locations were gone, with six of the locat...

Westhampton Super Market, Richmond, VA
Interesting article in today's Style Weekly newspaper of Richmond. This particular store was an A&P from around 1951 to around 1970. Here is a link to the article http://www.styleweekly.com/article.asp?idarticle=12167.

Yellow Front
In 1926, there were 22 Yellow Front grocery stores in Richmond. They were gone by 1931, with 10 of the locations shown as Sanitary Stores in 1931.
Anyone hear of them? A lot of locations for a local at the time, and I don't know if they were a Sanitary predecessor or not.

O.K. - here's a scan of the cover of a 1974 Best Warehouse Clearance flyer. Does anyone recognize the store on the flyer as having any particular prototype? The original Best store in Richmond was a plain brick box without any scalloped awnings like the one on the catalog - and the other Best stores...

The former Alfie's Fish and Chips location looked almost exactly like the photo Dave posted, BTW... One odd thing I noticed yesterday driving by the building - if you look to the left, there's a brick chimney. That's not too unusual for small commercial buildings from this era on this strip of road...
