Several stores in the Bay Area were remodeled. Some that come to mind are Marina Village in Alameda, Lakeshore in Oakland, Bayfair in San Leandro, and El Camino in San Bruno. I think there were others too (maybe College Avenue in Oakland) but I can't remember for sure. Also, a few were torn down and...

The original Food Lion #1 was torn down several years ago. It was in the shopping center that used to be a few hundred feet from I-85 off US 52 in Salisbury NC.

I've also heard rumors that Publix #1 is still standing but now belongs to someone else.

Phar-Mor. The Youngstown, OH based drug superstore chain that folded a few years back? In California? They never got out of the Midwest, that I'm aware of. Interesting store we should talk about sometime in the non-grocery section, I know a good bit about them...they were big in a lot of this area....

THE RULES: Please read before posting!

Welcome to the Groceteria.com Message Board. The Basics: The first thing you should know is that this is not a general interest supermarket message board. It is a somewhat tightly-moderated board on the subject of supermarket history. Posts about current operations are generally off-topic and subjec...

Per an article I read a while back, I think they converted (or were planning to convert) one or two stores in Raleigh to Farmer Jack very late in the game there too...

Per DC Grocery, there was also one in Washington at 1110 F St. NW. Picture is lifted from that (excellent) site.

It really looks like an auto dealership to me. The service areas in a lot of old dealerships are in separate buildings, and the lack of parking doesn't necessarily rule out a car dealership. They've changed as much as grocery stores over the years! I agree, but this one literally barely had enough ...

Yup, it's an odd one. I'd almost guess that it had maybe been a car dealership rather than a supremarket, but there's no evidence of service bays and it's not surrounded by much of a parking lot... I was hoping you'd tell me it was a Food Fair :) I know there was at least a JM Fields in Charleston, ...

Bull and DeRenne, Savannah GA: A&P?

Image

I know there was supposed to have been a 1953-era A&P in a center at approximately this location, but I'm not 100% sure on this one. Confirmations?

King Street, Charleston SC: A&P?

I'm guessing it's an A&P, based on the building and the site. Anyone with more info?

Any ideas? I haven't a clue on this one; the prototype doesn't even look vaguely familiar to me. Mayble it's a local chain or an independent?

Thanks for all the replies. I've actually been back for several days, but I'll keep some of these on file for the next visit. On Savannah Highway (US 17), there's a Doschers which is an old Colonial style A&P. (Inside, it even has the red 'The Butcher Shop' letters from A&P interiors from th...

While both chains had similar facades on stores, and there are examples of A&P architecture in the Mid-Atlantic resembling this, if you'll notice, the elongated middle section for signage to me indicates Winn-Dixie here, not A&P. A&P, while having this architecture, had a smaller area i...
