In Atlanta, there is a store that was once called the "Disco Kroger" because of it's location in the center of Atlanta's nightlife at the time. So I wonder if they had a disco ball. Or what about the former Big Star, later A&P that was next door? This store is the "Ansley Mall&quo...

The Maingate Plaza discount store sign looks just like one we had here in Maryland. It was a SEARS catalog store. Ours was about that size too. They sold appliances, sewing machines, vacuums and hardware, carpets. etc. That would be my guess. that's a great guess! The amount of letters would make i...

I've always been curious if the 1980's Winn-Dixie was the site of the scene in "Fried Green Tomatoes" where Kathy Bates in her Towanda moment "accidently" hits the VW that hogged the space she waiting for 6 times? I recall the Milledgeville location having Spanish Mission archit...

In Fort Valley, there is a small Harvey's grocery store (owned by the Delhaize group) in what appears to be an old Piggly Wiggly location. Up the street about a mile is the former Foodmax location which has been vacant for a few years. Harveys is moving into the larger Foodmax location. Actually th...

Re: Grand Union in DC

FYI, Grand Union opened 10 Basics Food Warehouse stores in DC in the early 1980's and sold most of them to the Food-A-Rama chain (Baltimore, MD) in 1984. This was GU's first attempt at a high-volume warehouse market. http://www.fdrama.com When GU went bankrupt years ago, C&S Wholesalers bought ...

The only addition I could offer was That Bi-Lo (Ahold) operated a few stores in the area until Bruno's bought them around 1989. Brunos wanted to name them "Food Fair" (that was another trade name they used in Alabama) but the little independent that you mentioned refused to sell the name....

The former Kroger location in Dublin does have a much different design than other Krogers from the era. A simular design in Albany (on Westover Blvd) is now a Gold's Gym. (Kroger pulled out of Albany years ago)

I have only heard about M&M from this site. Thanks for the additions.

Unfortunately I am not aware of any (Colonials) in the areas where you are traveling only because its too far east of my daily travels. I frequently travel to family in Newberry SC (NE of Augusta/NW of Columbia) and I never knew of a Colonial/big star in that part of the state. There are two former ...
