Safeway Converted Pylon Stores in California

Why is the San Francisco Safeway store the prototype of the Marina store when it opened in 1959, yet the Safeway in Highland Park opened in June of 1955 and has the same design? It is located at 5610 York Blvd in Highland Park, Calif.

The Pavillions store in Garden Grove was built as a Zodys, the first of the chain, back in 1960. It closed late 1984, and opened up as a Pavillions in October 1985.

Food4Less was operating 10 stores in addition to 30 Vivas,19 Boys, and 8 ABC Markets when it bought Alpha Beta from American Stores in 1991. Food 4 Less, was based in Highland Park, and formed in 1989 by Yucaipa.

I agree. The Mayfair Market i went to is now a Super A Foods but the interior is still a Mayfair. It still has the Mayfair decor and is very close to the decor in the ad. It is located in Eagle Rock on 2245 Yosemite Dr.

Food4Less had Alpha Beta, Boys Markets, Viva, and ABC markets when it bought Ralphs and converted the stores to Ralphs in 1995. How they got all the stores and when is another story. The address is correct, this Safeway was listed in an artical in the Times dated May 10, 1959 under "Building Hits All Time High in Downey". It cost $162,000 to build. I used Microsoft TerraServer to look up the address and was able to compare the building to the one in the picture.

The LA Times reports a Safeway opening in Downey on Florence Ave at Old River School Road. Not sure if it's this store, but the date is December 3, 1959. Could be.
