Re: Thoughts for the new year

DO NOT even consider shutting down the board! The way I see it, is that the site (and by extension the board) is basically a bunch of people talking about grocers past. You CANNOT find anything like it anywhere else; this is truly unique. On some levels, this site and the board is sort of a "th...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

My first experience with K-Mart was in late 1973 when the Dickson City, Pa. store opened and they had the electronic (digital) registers from the get-go throughout the store and at the front end as well. As I recall, they were rather large and kind of square(ish) or boxy. The readout was kind of a b...

I didn't buy this but here's a promotional item I got at A+P in the 1970's: WEO Coin Bank

Re: Items you bought at defunct supermarket chains that you still possess

One that comes to mind is a plaid vinyl picnic cooler bag which my Mother bought at P+C Foods (Penn Traffic Co.) which I still have-still usable and not even a crack in the plastic that I can see. Probably dates from sometime in the 70's. And even though they're not defunct (at least in Canada), I a...

Did Safeway ever build marinas in Canada? Looks like it could possibly be one.

Re: Loblaws' bewildering branding history

Perhaps at another Loblaw banner they may have been available but never saw them in another chain and/or independent market. And when they left here in the mid-70's, so did the brand. Also checked out some old ads and the Loblaws brand was indeed available along with Orchard Park.

Re: Loblaws' bewildering branding history

As far as a store brand, (at least in the US), I seem to remember Orchard Park which I believe was named for a suburb of Buffalo, NY where they were headquartered in the US. That brand would date from at least the 60's but can't recall if it was still in use when they left in the mid 70's because th...

Re: Rotating Kmart road signs

The recently closed Dickson City, Pa. store had a rotating "K" sign just like the one pictured. It opened in November 1973 (I was there opening day BTW) and left the area in mid-1980 and it was still rotating at that point. And now that Billy Gr mentions it and I give it some thought, neve...

Re: Kmart 2000 closures

If memory serves, that Saratoga location was actually a replacement store for one located in a shopping plaza on the other end of the city.

Re: 10748 Buckley Hall Rd, Mathews, VA

I would've said GU as well but could it have been an Acme in an earlier life? The reason I even think this is that second floor office mentioned. I've seen that feature in one of their stores in the Philadelphia area.

Shop 'N Save was a Hannaford banner and all that happened was they eventually rebranded the store as they did all of them.

Re: Nichols Discount City

To repeat, there was one (and only one) Nichols location ever in Gloversville. It opened in 1972 and closed probably late '80's or very early '90's or so. It wasn't long after that Wal-Mart demolished it and built their first store in the area which was open by the summer of '92. As far as grocers a...

Re: New location list: Albany through 1960

You just named the three locations right there. The one occupied by Frontier downtown was the replacement store for the E. Fulton St. store which is where the new Stewart's was built. The downtown store opened in early 1975 and Loblaws sold it to Chicago Markets out of Utica and they operated there ...

Re: Acme in New York

Yes, Loblaws opened in the mall out on the arterial (NYS Rte 30-A) in the fall of 1972. It was closed by the summer of 1976 and Price Chopper moved in that fall and remains there to this day and have expanded the store at least twice in the interim and now even have a drive thru pharmacy sort of on ...
