Re: Were There Two Albertsons on SE 82nd Avenue in 1983?

You know what? Now that I think about it, the sign hanging off that building that looks like it says "JS" is actually the old US Bank logo of United States Bank of Portland, which later became part of what is US Bank today.

That building has been a US Bank branch for a VERY long time.

Re: Your Favorite Classic Exteriors Going Away?

Fred Meyer had a lot of great signage and some interesting property layouts, but what really makes them interesting was their lack of standardization, and how they seemed willing to build or maintain a wide range of property sizes and accommodate store layouts...sometimes in separate buildings...to ...

If it is one of these two locations, I think it's the SE 82nd and Holgate. If you Street View 4360 Cascade Hwy and point north, the building next to the US Bank sign appears to be the same one behind the Albertson's sign. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=43...

Re: "Warehouse pricing" and grease pencils

If you REALLY wanted to see something impressive, you should have tried shopping at Aldi before they got scanners (and we're talking mid 1990's here). No pencils, and no price tags. The clerks had every price memorized. Sure they're a smaller store with a smaller selection, but it never failed to im...

Re: Tastee-Freez

That's probably the Hamburger Stand (another Wienerschnitzel chain) on S Broadway, which is a co-branded Tastee-Freez. It's actually an original Wienerschnitzel drive-thru A-frame, and the Tastee-Freez menu was added shortly before Wienerschnitzel purchased Tastee-Freez (they tried out the brand in ...

Re: Taco Bell 1985 Logo

I believe the font used in the "Demolition Man" promos was specific to the co-promotion of Demolition Man (on TV and in-store) and done in a futuristic style to fit in with the movie.

Re: Irvington(Fremont) Marina Safeway now a 99 Cent Store

Looking at the building in Google Street View, the exterior looks pretty original.

Google Street View's images from Fremont Blvd show the building active as "Smart & Final", but if you look from Blascow Rd, you'll see it as an empty building.

Re: Defunct Video Store Chains?

In Iowa, we had Movies to Go, who was sold to Moovies, who in turn was sold to Video Update, who in turn was sold to Movie Gallery, who also became the owners of Hollywood Video.

Hollywood isn't completely going away, but it's inevitable. We're losing all of our stores, but Omaha's keeping a few.

Re: Safeway in Lander, Wyoming, with Circle S logos

It took some digging, but I found a source confirming Lander is getting a new Safeway. It's a bullet point on the last page in the center column. http://www.wyomingeda.org/Newsletters/WEDA_September_2009.pdf Safeway is building a brand new “Lifestyles” store that will double the size of the current ...

Ream's Closing Original Store

Opened in 1945 and still operating in a 12,000 square-foot building, the original Ream's in Provo, Utah is closing its doors.

Re: Safeway closing Cheyenne, WY Store Pioneer Ave.

I don't believe it was Lifestyled . I believe its final interior is the 90's country yellow theme. They had purchased the block behind it with the intent of building a new store, which was delayed largely due to required chemical cleanup needs discovered after the property had been purchased. A uniq...

Re: H. Salt, Esq.

There was one in Portland, and it was a favorite of my dad's. We went there semi-regularly during my childhood. It was a dead ringer for the one in This Is Spinal Tap.

I'd love to try them again.

Re: Der Wienerschnitzel

Wienerschnitzel had a lonely A-frame operating in Champaign, IL, until just this year. The company tried to find a new franchisee to take it over to no avail. It wasn't a drive-through A-frame with the hole. The drive-thru was on the side of the building. They had indoor seating too, which is rare o...

Montgomery Ward - Metro North Mall - KC

I stumbled upon a nicely preserved Montgomery Ward this morning at the Metro North Mall in Kansas City. Signage and all, even on the auto center. http://www.99w.com/evilsam/gallery/groceteria/mwkc01.jpg http://www.99w.com/evilsam/gallery/groceteria/mwkc02.jpg http://www.99w.com/evilsam/gallery/groce...
